EE switches on 4G in 11 UK cities, offers fiber broadband to 11 million sites and opens 700 stores

Today marks the launch of the UK's first 4G network, with EE switching on its service in 11 cities: London, Bristol, Birmingham, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester, Sheffield and Southampton. If you don't have access immediately, you might not be waiting long, as the company promises 2,000 square miles of 4G network will be added every month from now on. This £1.5 billion investment means five cities will join the exclusive list before Christmas, and in the longer-term, 98 percent population coverage is expected by the end of 2014. Wired services aren't being forgotten -- EE Fibre Broadband is also available from today with the potential to serve 11 million locations with speeds of up to 76 Mbps. The University of Illinois College of Law - a national leader in the field of elder law and policy - invites applications for a clinical professor to develop and direct an Elder Financial Justice Clinic focused on matters relating to elder financial abuse. Each year, elderly U.S. citizens lose roughly $3 billion through financial frauds perpetrated by strangers, family members, friends, and neighbors. Despite increased attention to the phenomenon of elder financial abuse at the state and federal levels, instances of wrongdoing remain underreported, under-investigated, and under-prosecuted. The primary missions of the Elder Law Clinic will be to educate law students about the prevalence of elder financial abuse, to equip students with the necessary tools to detect, manage, and prosecute instances of wrongdoing, and to represent indigent elderly clients who have been financially victimized.

The position is a nine-month appointment as a Clinical Professor. Responsibilities include teaching a classroom component to the Clinic designed to orient students to the problem of elder financial abuse and to develop the necessary skills to detect, manage, and prosecute cases; closely supervising student casework and other matters related to the Clinic's representation of clients; developing relationships with other entities - including governmental agencies, advocacy groups, financial services organizations, and other campus units - that may be in a position to advance the Clinic's mission; and undertaking administrative responsibilities relating to management of the Clinic.

The successful candidate must be licensed to practice law (or in a position to secure licensure) in the state of Illinois; experienced in the area of civil or criminal litigation - ideally, with prior exposure to the field of fraud; and able to work effectively with students, clients, the bench and bar, other faculty members, and the broader community. Previous experience with clinical education is preferred, but not required. Salary is dependent upon experience.

The Task at Hand | The Cornell Daily Sun

Nobel Prize-winning poet Seamus Heaney began his visit to Cornell with the Eamon McEneaney memorial reading last Thursday at Schwartz Auditorium in Rockefeller Hall. Prof. Ishion Hutchinson, English, ?opened the session by relating an anecdote about a Colgate University professor who was starstruck and nervous as he introduced the visiting poet William Butler Yeats. The Colgate professor, who spoke of Yeats as the author of several great works, was later embarrassed to discover that none of these works were actually Yeats?. This error, Hutchinson claimed, was actually less devastating than it seemed. Poets like Yeats and Heaney ? widely perceived as the two most important Irish poets of all time ? represent a ?suspension between the archaic and the modern.? Poets of their caliber, he argued, are living and breathing creators of posterity, molded by all of the great works of their predecessors. Our job, as the next generation, he said, is to ?speak of what we know and testify of what we see.??

Heaney began with a passage from his Beowulf translation and a commentary on the timelessness of the text. The chosen passage starts with the line: ?Then a powerful demon, a prowler through the dark, nursed a hard grievance.? Heaney?s message was foreboding: Remember never to feel safe. Here, the thread of a historical narrative was ever-present. While Heaney is often thought of as the quintessential Irish poet, mining the lives of the often-overlooked island for the prospect of something universal, the poems he chose on Thursday granted weight to Prof. Hutchinson?s words about the poet as a continuation of history. Heaney read ?A Sofa in the Forties,? a poem about a child?s game of turning a living room sofa into a train ? an activity based on the BBC series Riders of the Range. Of the unintended juxtaposition of his childhood train with those of Auschwitz, he said, ?We enter history in ignorance. You live long enough and then you realize what you are doing.?

The context for ?Sunlight,? Heaney?s ode to his home at Mossbawn, was a 1940s Ireland where the British war effort was omnipresent. Lines like the closing one of this poem ? ?And here is love like a tinsmith?s scoop sunk past its gleam in the meal-bin? ? deftly sum up the importance of Heaney?s work. Everyday life and love were what Heaney cherished in Ireland at a time when the rest of the world was collapsing. Should we presume to be vessels of history, all we have to do is simply record our own.?

?Casualty? is an outlier in Heaney?s body of work. It is an overtly political poem, written in memory of Louis O?Neill, who was killed during the infamous 1972 events of Bloody Sunday. This is where Heaney?s historical narrative came to the forefront, as the poem alternates between humanizing descriptions of O?Neill and graphic accounts of the bombing and tensions in Ireland. The poem asks of O?Neill, ?How culpable was he?? and wonders if everyone who was killed on Bloody Sunday might be intrinsically innocent, if war is perhaps a force beyond the mental conception of individual men. The final line of the poem is ?Question me again,? a note on the individual?s inability to pass judgment on the events he witnesses. The poem is often compared in theme to Yeats? ?Easter 1916,? which treats political turmoil in a similar fashion, asking only a series of unanswerable questions and referencing associational guilt.

On Friday morning, what was billed as a ?Question & Answer Session? with Heaney turned out to be an intimate continuation of Thursday?s reading. Heaney started the session by reading his most widely-recognized poem, ?Digging.? He told the audience that ?Digging? was the ?first poem in which I really felt like I was making my own kind of noise.? The contrast between a pen and a spade is more apt than we may have realized, he disclosed, as Irish tribal writing was considered ?not an activity, but a task,? much like any other necessary labor. The task at hand was to engage in the creative act of digging up whatever is there and then ?letting it do the work for you.? After he read the poem, he remarked in a near whisper, ?That was 1964. I guess I was still pretty innocent then.? It was not until after the readings of ?Man and Boy,? a requested favorite, and ?North,? a discussion of writings of dissonance, that someone got up the courage to ask:

?What did you mean by ?you were innocent?? What does it mean to be a corrupted poet??

Heaney?s first response was laughter. Presumably, he only felt the weight of his words once they were thrown back at him. But to be a ?corrupted poet,? he finally said, is to become aware that you are a ?poet? at all. The birth of a poet is ?hopeful and panicky? and ?open and innocent,? but the priority will shift to making things ?witty and closed off and perfect.? This innocence is something to be valued despite its imperfections, as it allows us to write things with ?a sense of danger,? Heaney advised. This issue resurfaced when a student asked Heaney about how he weighs the consequences that truth can bring against that dedication to openness, referencing a poem about Heaney?s father, ?Follower.? Heaney identified a line in the poem and then said, ?Talking of innocence, what I?d probably do nowadays is just stop there.? ?His advice to aspiring writers was to get rid of their sense of a moral high ground and capture effectively by creating a ?commerce between temperament and the times we live in.?

The reading he did from a series of his poems, Station Island, was prefaced with a heavy political contextualization. But Heaney stated afterwards, ?I didn?t identify the man at the door, it would have been unjust. Stay in the solitude of an artistic area. But there are times ?? And he trailed off.?

Prof. Hutchinson asked if anyone had a suggestion for the final reading. It had been only 35 minutes, but we were allegedly running short on time. Someone wanted to hear the third sonnet from ?The Clearances,? a series of eight sonnets that Heaney wrote after his mother?s death in 1984. He recited the sonnet from memory. At first, the poem is about peeling potatoes. Then the poem meditates on Catholic Mass and final absolutions before tackling the metallic imagery of war and the warmth of home. ?The Clearances? is distinctly Irish, but also distinctly human. Although my frustration with Heaney?s pandering jokes and grumble-slurred sentences had been overpowering at points throughout the events of the last 24 hours, this poem brought me back to my senses. Here we were, glimpsing the archaic works of William Butler Yeats, in the presence of a genuine and not-yet-archaic vessel of the last century, the one that we ourselves had not quite been participants of. Here we were, a collection of the newly ?hopeful and panicky,? asking eager questions and hanging on words in hopes of gleaning a shred of wisdom on how to confront the new generation which is wholly ours to record. And as I shuffled slowly and regretfully out of the room, unable to even whisper a ?Thank you,? I put aside fear of judgment to take a last, uncomfortably long over-the-shoulder look at those elbow pads and that white hair ? for posterity?s sake.

Stone Mountain, Ga., resident Kimberly Smith couldn't believe her eyes when she saw how much she was saving on her mortgage under a loan modification with Bank of America. That's not to say that it was a generous amount: Her monthly payments went down by a grand total of $1.61.

"It has to be a Halloween joke," Smith told WXIA-TV in Atlanta. "They have got to be kidding.... I mean, they wasted more on postage and FedEx [sending the notification] than what I am getting as a reduction."

Smith was trying to reduce her mortgage's interest rate through the federal government's Making Home Affordable program, which determines reductions based on a fixed percentage of income. But while her modification was being processed, her income took a steep dive.

"My job was on the line, and I had to either take a pay cut or probably would not have a job," she said.

Bank of America told WXIA that Smith's drop in pay was factored into determining her reduction, which is why it ended up so low. But after Smith's story aired on the TV news, the bank said that it would look into a way to get Smith a more substantial reduction.

A little more than a week later, the bank came through. Smith's new loan modification dropped her interest rate from 7.87 percent to 4 percent ?- a much heftier savings of $262 a month.

"I cried. I was excited," Smith told WXIA after the new modification came through. "I was just happy. It was a blessing because without you all, I would not be able to get what I have now."

While this story had a happy ending, there have been a number of others involving Georgia homeowners tangling with banks that haven't come to such an amicable end. Two cases in Atlanta were particularly heart-wrenching: In one, a woman lost her home after Bank of America foreclosed on the property, claiming that she wasn't paying her mortgage. But it turned out that another institution owned the woman's loan -- which she had been current on -- and because of a paperwork foul-up BofA falsely believed it should have been receiving her payments. And another homeowner nearly lost her home after county officials placed a lien on her property and sold it to recover the debt on a tax bill that wasn't even hers.

Home to Tintin and Smurfs, Belgium looks to reinvigorate comic industry

The 'home of the comic book,' Belgium wielded outsized influence in the comics industry until the 1980s. Now it's trying to regain that sway via government-supported innovation.

It may now be dominated by American superheros and Japanese manga, but the comic book industry was once associated with no country more than Belgium. Through much of the last century, this small, Western European nation played an outsized role in shaping comics through iconic characters like Tintin and the Smurfs.

But over the past few decades, the industry has fallen on hard times. Now, Belgium is fighting to regain its influence by positioning itself as a center of innovation and excellence for the rest of the industry.

?There is no reason why we won?t have more great authors, because we have very good [comic book art] schools, and these schools discover much new and interesting talent,? says Thierry Bellefroid, a comic book critic and historian.

?On the creative level, the innovations that have been started here aren?t yet finished yet, but they are in the process of changing the comic book market.?

'Home of the comic book'

In the industry, Belgium is referred to as the ?home of the comic book.? The title has its roots in the 1920s, when Belgian artists started to blaze a trail of innovation in comic book art. They invented the speech bubble, for example, as well as the drawing technique called ?Ligne Claire? (or ?clear line?), which moved comic books from cartoonish blobs of color to a sharper kind of realism. They debuted the weekly comic strip magazine format with titles like Spirou and Tintin, selling, at one point, as many as 250,000 copies each week.

?The Belgian comic book became so famous and established because of the success of Tintin,? says Mr. Bellefroid.

Tintin, which still sells more than 1 million comic books a year worldwide, was the industry leader between the 1920s and the 1970s. It helped position Belgium as No. 1 in comic books, a country producing about 80 percent of all comics in Europe by the 1970s. But by the 1980s, Belgium had become a victim of its own initial successes.

?Tintin and other big Belgian comics couldn?t reinvent themselves because they had developed a very clear, loyal fan base and they were also trapped in a very Catholic Belgium at the time,? says Bellefroid. ?This is how Belgium got its market share eaten up, initially by new, edgier French comics.?

It was not only French comic strip magazines like ?Pilote? that began to nudge Belgium aside, but American comic-book publishing giants like DC and Marvel also began to impinge on Belgium?s European market share. More recently, new centers of comic art innovation, like Japan and Argentina, have emerged.

In parallel, as Western economies globalized, most of the Belgian publishing houses were bought up by multinationals, so that today, the business side of the comic book industry is mainly controlled from Paris or London.

Sales among these comic book publishing majors have been on the decline for the past five to 10 years, accentuated by the eurocrisis. Prowler at Cruise's home turns out to be neighbor

(AP) ? Police say a security guard at actor Tom Cruise's house used a stun gun on a would-be prowler, but the man turned out to be an intoxicated neighbor who may have mistakenly entered the property.

Lt. Lincoln Hoshino says the confrontation occurred at Cruise's Beverly Hills residence about 9:30 p.m. PDT Sunday when the actor and his family weren't home.

The guard saw a man "climbing a fence to gain access to the property" and he used the stun gun to detain him for police.

The officer tells City News Service that the man was identified as a 41-year-old neighbor who lives in an adjacent property, and was intoxicated at the time.

The man was taken into custody for trespassing and treated at a hospital for any problems stemming from the stun gun.

The story behind setting up a news site - Business, technology and ...

Every day an estimated 1 million new internet sites are launched. Once you peel away the numerous dummy sites that exist to feed SEO links networks,?the vast majority are new ventures, small businesses or personal blogs like this one. Sites cost money and time to run and in the main they are started with the hope of a financial return.

This is the story of how and why I set up a news site called Asian Business Daily, the economics of running it, and why after nearly a year of operation, I am closing it.

Business and personal objectives of Asian Business Daily

About Asian Business Daily

Asian Business Daily (ABD) is/was a site containing business and finance news about Asia, primarily aimed at business people from outside Asia who had business interests in the region. If you worked in a multi-national with operations or suppliers in Asia, or if you were trying to set up a deal with Asia, I wanted ABD to help you understand what was going on.

We get to what I hoped ABD would turn into below, but for its one year of life ABD was a WordPress site, living in a slightly customised version of a $50 theme. News articles were added by writers based in the region, supplemented by editorials from myself and other people who contacted me along the way. Revenue was entirely advertising based with some dabbling in affiliate referral fees.

If I was being generous, the venture broke even. If I was being critical and honest, as I have been below, I lost money.

Business objectives

I felt there was a market niche to be exploited. Trade with Asia was growing and I felt the standard business news services in America and Europe didn?t provide much insight. Even sites like the Financial Times only seemed to cover what Western businesses were doing. If you did business with Asia, you were lacking information and insight.

My objectives were

  • 3 months
    • Get the site working and registering in the first five pages of Google for key search terms like ?Asian business news?, ?China business news?
    • Gain credibility such that respected blogs and sites on related topics would link to ABD
    • Be awarded page rank 1 or more by Google
  • 6 months
    • Hit 10,000 page views per month
    • Gain a link from a major news site
    • Achieve page rank 3
  • 12 months
    • Break even
    • Be growing traffic by 10-20% per month
    • Have sufficient potential to warrant investment in additional revenue streams
      • Market data on Asia
      • Webinars and conferences
      • E-learning centre for speaking business languages
  • 5 years
    • Have gained enough credibility and traffic that a major news media business (e.g. Fairfax Australia) would buy ABD to enhance its business and Asia credentials (Aim high, why not?)

At each stage I intended I would review performance against these objectives and pull the pin if not. Sounds good right? Sounds disciplined? Well I just about achieved 3 and 6 months targets, but I did give myself more leeway than I should. By 10 months though, it was clear I wouldn?t succeed and I finally got real.

Personal objectives

I had worked in business consulting for 7 or 8 years, and then taken the plunge to work with some small internet businesses. To begin with I knew very little about the practicalities of the web and learned a lot fast. The overwhelming sense I got was, ?everyone else has taught themselves, just got on with it, thrown some money at an idea and either succeeded, or learned a lot for next time?.

On a personal level then, I wanted to experience that, do something that was mine.

The highs and lows

The highs

  • Getting my first story up
  • Receiving my first email from a reader
  • Being awarded page rank 2 from ?n/a? and seeing an immediate traffic uplift
  • Selling my first direct ad
  • Everytime I received an encouraging email from another site owner

The lows

  • Two weeks after launch and my traffic was no more than 20 visitors a day
  • When my main writer went AWOL for a week without warning? and then did it again a month later
  • The first time my traffic took a dip after a Google algorithm update
  • Telling other bloggers who had been supporting me that I was closing the site

The economics of running a content site funded by advertising

Income came from three sources

  1. Banner ads
  2. Direct sale ads
  3. Backlinks in articles

1. Banner ads

The revenue equation from banner ads is straightforward for most advertising platforms

Revenue = Traffic volume x CPC[1] x CTR[2]

or

Revenue = Traffic volume x CPM [3]

[1] CPC = cost per click. The rate you get when someone clicks on your ad
[2] CTR = click through rate. The proportion of visitor to a page who click on an ad
[3] CPM = cost per thousand visitors. The net effect per thousand page views

Simple though the equation is these all important ratios can make or break you. If you run a platform like Google Adsense then these are exactly the ratios you work with. If you sell your own ads, as I started to do, you can do so on a straight time period basis (e.g. a month), a number of views basis (CPM), a number of clicks basis (CPC). However, you price it, you will end up coming back to the same metrics.

The ?benchmark content site? is based on observed analytics of a couple of well run sites that pull in around a million visitors per month and monetize that traffic from ads inserted into the content.

The ?metro newspaper? metrics are based on analysis I did of Fairfax?s Sydney Morning Herald and Melbourne Age. The CPM of the print version is in terms of income per page.

The immediate observations are

  1. Achieved click through rates (CTR) are poor, running about a fifth of the benchmark
  2. The Metro Newspaper website achieves a significant premium in CPM not only over ABD but also our benchmark

CTR can depend on the strength of the context of the ad to the content and unless you directly pick your ads, you are reliant on those you get served by your ad platform (e.g. Google Adsense). If your traffic is low it doesn?t get the chance to refine the ads that will work for that page. The benchmark site has sufficient traffic that Google can optimise each page much better.?I got approached by several ad platforms as alternatives to Google, but I found Google not only generated similar rates, but had a better quality of ad. One platform Lijit, seemed to rely on using annoying ads that were not contextual and in my opinion heavily detracted from the content of the site.

Another factor of CTR is placement on the page relative to the content, which unfortunately is reliant on programming skills to implement

In terms of the Metro Newspaper?s CPM, this is probably determined by CPC rate. The newspaper is able to sell ad space directly and therefore achieve a better price. Its brand and known readership means it can command higher rates than general ads served up by someone like Google. Not to mention that Google must also take its cut.

2. Direct Sale Ads

Its no secret that Direct Sale Ads command better CPM than generic contextual ads. The problem is you can?t sell ads directly until you can prove your traffic and longevity, and selling ads takes time and money.

I sold three series of direct ads, all from people who approached me directly. All were done on the basis of monthly deals. Perhaps I could have done better being proactive but I didn?t have the time to spare. As you can see below, I achieved rates similar to our benchmark site this way.

I sold my direct ads on a ?per month? basis with no clever rules about when the ads were shown. If you do want to implement rules about when to serve up your own ads, the Google?s Doubleclick is pretty easy to use.

3. Backlinks

High quality backlinks are the mainstay of most SEO strategies and a decent site can supplement its explicit advertising income with this more indirect form of advertising. Once Google grants you page rank of 1 or more, you will start to get enquiries for selling or renting links to sites. Everyone wants links from genuine sites with real content and real visitors.

Often the advertiser will provide the article that contains the link too, but these are generally poorly written and your reader can spot them as an SEO article a mile off. I tried to find a story that fitted with the enquirer and fit the link and their keyword anchor text into the news story.

The price paid for links goes up with site page rank and would start about $25 at page rank 1, moving to $50 or more for page rank 3. You shouldn?t put more than a couple of links on the page, and you should allow the advertiser to have exclusivity to the page.

Operating Costs

Over the ten months the site operated, the main costs, apart from my time were:

  • News articles $1,050
  • SEO $100
  • Hosting $100
  • Email marketing $0
1. News Articles

News on ABD was sourced from various local asian news outlets including the business pages of Chinese newspapers. I employed local writers through ODesk, a freelance contracting portal, for around $2.50 for a 250 word article. The writers rewrote the stories in English, and were supposed to provide a western context. They then logged on to the ABD WordPress portal, picked an image from the library, loaded the story in, categorised it and published it.

I kept an eye on what was going live through the WordPress mobile app and although I frequently had to edit the material, it mostly ran itself. Keeping the articles on the right topics was challenging, as was getting frustrated at their lack of insight. I had to keep reminding myself that not only was I only paying $2.50 an article, but they had grown up in a culture that was not naturally sceptical of government controlled news.

The stories from the writers were supplemented with ones that I came across and my own longer opinion led editorials. In fact, if I got one great thing out of Asian Business Daily, it was that I became truly engrossed in what was going in Asia.

I was also grateful to receive very good contributions from American and English business people in China which I published in return for a link back to their site.

At around $2.50 an article therefore, the content would pay for itself when viewed around 1,250 times.?(Advertising income ~ $2 per thousand page views).

Even at 10,000 page views a month therefore I was losing money since I was publishing about 40 articles a month. On average, that means each new article is viewed just 250 times. I would need 50,000 monthly page views, or much better CPM to breakeven on articles.

2. SEO

SEO, search engine optimisation, covers a host of techniques and there are many people who can make a better claim than me to know how best to deliver traffic to websites. Indeed, part of ABD?s failure would be due to my poor SEO.

I had the fortune to work with some people who knew the subject quite well and attended a couple of conferences in Las Vegas such as Pubcon. So, I was self taught, and part of building ABD was to learn more.

I got ABD to page rank 3 at its peak through careful link building and promotion on sites that were associated with Asia, China and business. At it peak Google Webmaster Central was telling me I had 3,875 links to ABD, of which 2,564 were to the homepage and these came from 201 unique domains. I?m really not sure whether that is good, bad or otherwise, but I?m told the number to focus on is the number of unique domains, which assuming they are all hosted from different places, gives reasonable diversity. The number of links seemed to grow at about 20-30% a month, and after the first couple of months, I didn?t have to add many myself (again, my hands off approach could be the cause of the traffic problems).

I had four types of self generated links:

  • Blog comments
  • Blogroll links
  • Directory links
  • Dirty links (!)

Blog comments

I made sure that I added comments to business news and current affairs sites that mentioned a China or Asian business subject, along with my website URL in my profile. Where possible I referred to a specific article we had written and left the website?s name in my profile. I avoided an comments that would appear ?spammy? or any sites that did not appear genuine. Many of the influential sites (e.g. ft.com) would allow links but they did ?not follow?, so the contained no link juice. Their traffic was worthwhile though.

Blogroll Links

I exchanged homepage links with a number of sites covering similar material. ?Blogrolls? are the list of links that appear somewhere on the homepage as ?resources? or something similar. This was hard to do to begin with but after I had gained some traction and proved I had a site worth linking to, it became easier. Most of the people running the site were very happy to exchange tips by email as well, and seemed to be in a similar position.

Directory Links

I know. Most SEOs count these as bad links. But to get going they seemed to be the only way of getting anything. I didn?t have the luxury of owning a proprietary network of sites which many SEOs seem to have. On the other hand, directories that listed news sites actually delivered a reasonable amount of traffic, so they couldn?t all have been bad. I also paid to have articles for library sites written and although they probably add nothing in the long term, they did at least get the site initially ?powered up?.

Dirty Links

These are really bad, cheap and possibly the cause of the later traffic problems. $5 on fiverr.com will buy you a set of dirty links from a dark distant forum on harvard.edu or similar. They really aren?t worth it.

3. Hosting

My hosting ended up costing $100 or so. You can get it cheaper, but I did that and had to get a different host very quickly afterwards because the first cheap host was so slow and more often than not, offline.

4. Email marketing

Traffic from daily or weekly emails started to become a significant source (2%+) once my email list got beyond 100. Obviously it could do with being more, but I was surprised how readily people signed up once I?d added a ?sign up? icon next to the story.

Technically setting up a daily or weekly email of the latest stories and managing the subscriptions was so easy thanks to Mailchimp which offers a free service for the first 12,000 emails you send per month. I love business models that help new businesses get started!

Why I closed the site

  • The economics were not working and were unlikely to work without significantly higher traffic
  • ABD was unlikely to get significantly higher traffic unless the content quality also increased significantly ? which would cost a lot more, raising the required traffic level higher again
  • I did not have the time to devote to search engine marketing, advertising sales and alternative revenue sources needed to make it work

Sadly since the site was closed I think my understanding of what is going on in Asia, China particularly, has reduced. However, I think it was the right decision, despite the effort and funds that I had put in.

If you live in the path of Hurricane Sandy, here's a quick
rundown of the things you should be considering right now.

1. Figure out where you and the pets will be riding out the storm
inside your home. An interior room with no windows is best.

2. As a backup plan, prepare a list of shelters and pet-friendly
hotels and their phone numbers.

3. Get supplies. You need food and bottled water for yourself and
your pets. Don't forget things like pet meds, first aid kits,

4. Your dog or cat should be wearing a collar and up-to-date ID
tags. Keep a leash or carrier handy.

Prepare an identification kit for your pet. Write down

number is; and what your veterinarian's phone number is.
Include a photo of each pet if available. Also include vaccination
records. Put everything in a large zippered baggie.

If you have to evacuate, take your animals with you. Don't
forget to grab the ID baggie too! You'll want to have that
info. Shelters may need vaccination details in particular. "In
any disaster, people should evacuate with their animals," says
Diana Guerrero, an animal disaster expert. "If a situation is
unsafe for humans, it is unsafe for animals."

Preparing right now is key. "Don't wait until the last
minute" to prepare for the storm, says the ASPCA's Green.
"Act now and tune in to your local news to monitor the
hurricane's path. And remember, please take your pets with you

Pick the right dog at the shelter

One of the saddest experiences for many dogs is becoming lost, separated or abandoned by their family. Often dogs become homeless when an owner has to move to a new town or city and is not able to take the dog with them. Many times when owners pass away the family doesn?t want to keep the dog and turns them over to a rescue.

There are many different breed rescues located all around the world. These organizations are usually staffed entirely by volunteers that rescue abandoned dogs and care for them while looking for suitable homes. Often the volunteers choose to provide homes for the dogs so they are not kept in kennels. This process also allows the volunteers to get to know the dogs and see how they interact with children and other pets within their household. Some of the ?foster? homes also offer some basic training for the rescued dogs if they do not have a good understanding of the basic commands.

Dogs that are brought into the rescue with a known history are often easier to find homes for. Usually puppies are not brought to a rescue, but there are often a high number of senior dogs left at rescue shelters that are very hard to find homes for.

Benefits To Getting A Dog From A Shelter
For those families that would like to get a dog that already has basic training, is housebroken, and also is spayed or neutered a dog from a rescue is a perfect option. Often these dogs are very well trained and there is a good record of the interaction that they have with their foster families. These families work to socialize the dogs as well as find out if they are good with children, other dogs as well as pets. Volunteers that work in the shelters are very familiar with the breeds and their characteristics.

The dogs from shelters are always spayed or neutered. The cost to adopt a dog from a shelter is often less than most vets fees are for just the spay or neuter. All vaccinations are up to date and the dogs are usually treated for fleas, parasites and heartworms prior to adoption.

Dogs from a rescue are often very loving dogs that are eager to find a good home and a permanent place to live. Many people that have adopted a dog from a shelter report that the dogs are very affectionate and loyal, almost as if they realize that they have been specially chosen.

The cost to obtain a dog from a rescue shelter is usually between one and two hundred dollars. Often dogs that have required a lot of veterinarian services may require an additional amount of a donation to cover the added expenses. All the fees obtained from the adopted dogs are used to buy food, provide shelter and veterinarians services as well as advertise and find homes for other dogs in the shelter.

If you want to get a dog of a particular breed consider adopting one of the many dogs currently in a rescue shelter. If you have a shelter in your area you also may wish to volunteer to help dogs in the shelter or even become a foster family for dogs looking for permanent homes.

PULLMAN, Wash. - Young adults who are interested in politics are more likely than others to participate in public affairs by speaking out about their political beliefs using Facebook, online blogs and other social media, according to a study by researchers from the Edward R. Murrow College of Communication at Washington State University. Prior research has shown that the more informed a citizen is, the more likely he or she is to participate in elections.

"Given the historically low levels of political participation among young people, this is an important finding,? said co-author Bruce Pinkleton, a WSU communications professor. "The more we can get people involved in the political process, the more likely we are to enjoy the benefits of a strong, healthy democracy.?

?

The findings are expected to become particularly significant as candidates continue to branch out into other new forms of media.

?

The study is scheduled for publication in the November issue of the journal Mass Communication and Society. Co-authored by Yushu Zhou, a former WSU graduate student and a doctoral candidate at Stanford University, it is based on an analysis of the political involvement and online interactions of more than 400 undergraduate college students.

Pinkleton and Zhou found that participants who were interested in election information were more likely to use social media, public affairs websites and other digital information sources to learn about elections and were more likely to participate in public affairs by expressing their opinions online. Earlier studies have found that participants using traditional news sources, government sources and candidate websites had higher levels of political efficacy, or the belief that their participation matters.

"When young people are motivated, even blogs and social media can be important sources of information and contribute to their political participation,? said Pinkleton.

?

Presidential candidates Barack Obama and Mitt Romney offer political websites and social networking sites in order to promote their campaigns. Both candidates use not only the popular Facebook, but have developed Tumblr, Spotify and Flickr accounts. These websites enable political engagement and are typically used by young adults.

?

"These new communication channels not only provide richer political information and interactive messages for voters, especially young voters, but also reshape the relationships between candidates and voters,? said Zhou.

?


The article is titled, "Modeling the Effects of Political Information Source Use and Online Expression on Young Adults? Political Efficacy.? Mass Communication and Society is a scholarly journal focused on publishing articles from a wide variety of perspectives and approaches that advance mass communication theory, especially at the societal or macro-social level. It draws heavily from many other disciplines, including sociology, psychology, anthropology, philosophy, law and history.

When Rihanna sold her home last year, it wasn't because she had grown tired of it or was looking for something bigger. The R&B diva was in the middle of several lawsuits claiming that her new modern pad was poorly constructed and resulted in water damage to the home when she listed it as a short sale for?$4.5 million.

Inside, the home has a pool, bowling alley, racquetball court, art deco movie theater and a professional recording studio. Other amenities include a five-car garage, gym, tennis court and ?imaginative playground.?

Murphy has been trying to sell the home for quite some time, listing it first for $30 million, then dropping the price to $19 million in 2007 and most recently to $15.9 million in early 2010. The home is not currently MLS-listed, but according to the Daily News, Keys will spend about $12 million on the estate.
