Elmira church distributes hundreds of toys

Hundreds of children in Chemung County will wake up happy Christmas morning, thanks to a massive Toys for Tots distribution organized by one Elmira church. Our Lara Greenberg tells us how Shabach Tabernacle of Praise is getting everyone in the holiday spirit.

ELMIRA, N.Y. -- Parents and godparents filed into Shabach Tabernacle of Praise Thursday to get their hands on the best toys they could find. This year, the Elmira Church served 600 children with free gifts through Toys for Tots in Syracuse.

"It's important because children look forward to Christmas every year."

"This is what it's all about. Touching the hearts of everyone, children, parents," said Pastor Bobby Smith, of Shabach Tabernacle of Praise.

Pastor Smith tells us that on Wednesday, every single one of these pews was filled with people waiting for gifts. More than 1,200 toys were handed out Wednesday with still hundreds left over to be handed out Thursday.

For parents who can't afford gift shopping, this distribution was a true Christmas miracle.

"I usually provide for my godchildren myself, but this year, I'm not as fortunate as normal," said Joni Vargson of Elmira.

"We all need a miracle. It's really hard out there, right there, especially this time of year for all families."

Pastor Smith chokes up, thinking about all the children and families that are being helped.

"Somebody's got to be there and understand where they are and love on them and give them a sense of hope," said Pastor Smith.

Because that sense of hope is a truly priceless gift.

Whatever toys are leftover after Thursday will be saved for distribution next Christmas.
