Next week, the 2012 NFL regular season launches.? As a very, very, very (did I say very?) small footnote to that, the PFT weed will be spreading into new territory.
We?re taking the website to NBC Sports Network, with a one-hour show every weekday, at 5:00 p.m. ET.
The show, curiously dubbed Pro Football Talk, debuts on Tuesday, September 4.? Hosted by the highly competent and funny and engaging Erik Kuselias and by an Internet hack who is the exact opposite of those three traits, the show will bring the PFT temperament and attitude to the small screen, with help from NBC talent like Rodney Harrison, Hines Ward, Doug Flutie, Ross Tucker, Amani Toomer, and Peter King.
The powers-that-be tell me they?re sending out an official press release soon.? They wanted me to say something for it.? Here?s the best I could muster:? ?When we started the website, the goal was to create a place I?d want to visit as a football fan.? That same objective applies to Pro Football Talk. ?We wanted to make a show that I would spend time watching if I wasn?t involved in it.? Of course, some may say they?d be more likely to watch this show if I actually wasn?t involved in it.?
The content here won?t suffer a bit.? We?ll be tweaking the format of PFT Live so that it will be a shorter show, with less prep time, which gives me more time at the keyboard.? And we?ve put together an excellent stable of writers, from MDS to Darin Gantt to Josh Alper to Evan Silva.
Like the website, Pro Football Talk will be a creature of the moment, with the latest news you need to know, outside-the-box analysis, genuine debate, and some humor.? Not forced or phony laughs, but genuinely funny moments (hopefully) that will make you feel like you?re hanging out with a group of friends.? (Or at a minimum casual acquaintances whom you don?t hate.)
The party starts next Tuesday at 5:00 p.m. ET.? On Wednesday, I?ll be at MetLife Stadium for the show, as we get ready for the regular-season opener between the Cowboys and the Giants.
We?ll be seeking your questions and your input and your feedback; this show is for you not for us and we want to be sure we cover the subjects that you want us to cover ? and that we avoid low-hanging fruit and five-letter quarterback/punt protector/special-teams aces.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. colleges, holding onto a shrinking lead as the world's biggest educator of international students, are eyeing a promising new market in Brazil, an emerging economy with big hopes for the future but a shortage of skilled labor.
U.S. Commerce Undersecretary Francisco Sanchez will lead officials from 66 U.S. colleges and universities to Brasilia, Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro beginning Thursday on what he told Reuters is the biggest trade mission of the Obama administration.
The seven-day visit capitalizes on Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff's "Science Without Borders" initiative aimed at reducing her nation's skills deficit by sending as many as 101,000 students to study abroad over the next four years.
"She's stated publicly that she wants half of those to go to the United States and specifically to study in the STEM areas: science, technology, engineering and math," Sanchez said.
Brazil's skilled-worker shortage is a major challenge on the country's path to developed-nation status. In addition to spurring Brazil to seek educational opportunities abroad, the shortage has encouraged the government to explore ways to ease immigration rules to attract more foreign professionals.
In sectors ranging from construction and oil exploration to telecommunications, companies complain of not being able to find qualified applicants in Brazil to fill jobs.
U.S. MARKET SHARE SHRINKING
While Brazil's own universities are graduating an increasing number of students, many still lack the necessary skills to compete internationally, said Jo?o de Castro Neves, a Latin American analyst at the Eurasia group in Washington.
"It's basically a matter of quality, not only at the universities but at the primary schools and the secondary schools," Castro Neves said.
The Science Without Borders program, which provides scholarships for Brazilians to study abroad for one year, meshes with the Obama administration's drive to attract more foreign students as part of its effort to double exports.
"Our higher education system is recognized around the world as being one of very high quality, of being of great value and so we want to promote it," said Sanchez, who led an education trade mission last year to Indonesia and Vietnam.
About 650 Brazilian students started U.S. studies under the program in January, and that was followed by a second wave of more than 1,500 students for U.S. summer and autumn course work.
Over the past decade, the U.S. share of the international education market has fallen to 20 percent from 28 percent, as schools in China, Canada, Britain, Australia, France and Japan have increased enrollment.
But U.S. colleges and universities still attract more foreign students than other national systems, and enrollment hit a record 723,277 in 2010-11, up 32 percent from 2000-01.
Foreign students pay the full "out-of-state" cost of a college education, helping schools meet their bottom line.
They represented about 3.5 percent of total enrollment of 20.5 million in 2010-11. Their top fields of study are business and management, engineering, math and computer sciences, and physical and life sciences.
The Commerce Department, which more typically leads trade missions to sell energy equipment or construction services, is involved in promoting education because services sold to overseas students count as exports in national trade tallies. The United States raked in $21 billion in tuition and living expenses paid by foreign students in the 2010-11 academic year.
But only $257 million, from 8,777 students, came from Brazil, the sixth-largest economy in the world. That was just 1.2 percent of the U.S. international student body that year.
"Given the size of Brazil, that should be much larger," Sanchez said. "Our interests are very much aligned here."
China and India, which Brazil sees as rivals for status and innovation on the international stage, sent 157,558 and 103,895 students, respectively, to the United States in 2010-11, accounting for about 36 percent of foreign students here.
BIG TUITION COSTS
Both those countries have a growing middle class and a lot more people willing to spend $200,000 or $300,000 to send their child to school in the United States, said Allan Goodman, president of the Institute of International Education, a U.S. non-profit group that promotes international study.
"They may not own a home ... but they have money, and they're saving it for an education," Goodman said.
He called Brazil's program "brilliant" because it ensures the students have to return home to get their degree. They come to the United States for their third year of university study and transfer those credits back to Brazil.
The U.S. delegation includes small schools such as Emporia State University in central Kansas and large ones such as Michigan State University. Other schools include Rutgers University in New Jersey, the University of Southern California, Texas A&M and the Savannah College of Art & Design in Georgia.
One big obstacle Brazilian students face is the language barrier since they are less likely to know English than their Indian or Chinese counterparts, said Maria de los Angeles Crummett, associate vice president for global affairs at the University of South Florida in Tampa.
Brazilian students, whose native tongue is Portuguese, often have more of a cultural attraction to Europe, which is a challenge for U.S. schools to overcome, Crummett said.
The U.S. State Department is helping to tackle that problem through an intensive English immersion program to prepare Brazilian students for studying in the United States. The Obama administration has also sought to attract more Brazilians to the United States by easing visa requirements for them.

World-renowned epidemiologist Richard Wilkinson, professor emeritus of social epidemiology at the University of Nottingham Medical School in England, will deliver the third annual Public Lecture on Indian Health at Western Carolina University on Wednesday, Sept. 5.
Wilkinson won?t even have to leave his home country to give his talk, titled ?The Spirit Level: Why Equality is better for Everyone.? That?s because he will be speaking through the videoconferencing system in WCU?s recently opened Health and Human Sciences Building.
This year?s lecture will take a broader approach than previous events and will include discussion of the overarching issue of health disparities as they relate to social inequality, said Lisa Lefler, director of Native Health Programs at WCU.
?Professor Wilkinson will speak on the timely topic of inequality and its impact on society,? Lefler said. ?Comparing life expectancy, mental health, levels of violence, teen birth rates, drug abuse, child well-being, obesity rates, levels of trust, the educational performance of school children or the strength of community life among rich countries, it is clear that societies that tend to do well on one of these measures tend to do well on all of them, and the ones that do badly do badly on all of them.?
Wilkinson has played a formative role in international research on the social influences on health and on the societal effects of income inequality. He co-wrote ?The Spirit Level? with Kate Pickett, which won the 2011 Political Studies Association Publication of the Year Award.
The lecture will begin at 8:30 a.m. in Room 204 of the Health and Human Sciences Building on WCU?s West Campus. Registration gets under way at 8 a.m.
After the presentation, the audience will hear from a panel of experts from local and distance sites, including the University of Tennessee College of Nursing, Wake Forest University Medical School, the Jackson County Health Department and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. Panelists will offer their own critiques and opinions of Wilkinson?s presentation.
The event is open to the public free of charge. The annual lecture is sponsored by Harrah?s Cherokee Casino and Hotel and WCU?s College of Health and Human Sciences.

First I thought this article was cool, but it's not, so i'm going to try to spice it up.
When I was 16 and taking drivers ed, i was in a position in my life where I either had to practice on a huge tank of a car (automatic) or drive my sisters VW Bug (stick). Well, my sister always stressed out and yelled at me, and the owner of the other car was always busy, so i didn't do too much practicing of my driving.
So, just before the test, i had a dream where I was driving a stick, and it was a stress free enviroment and I was seeing how it went. How it felt to let the clutch out, switch the gear, etc.
Anyways, after that, I didn't have a problem driving stick shifts anymore. Ya, of course, someone might point out that I learned how to drive the stick in RL, but got the necessary practice in my dreams. So fuck you, I beat ya to it.

The price of oil rose to near $97 a barrel on Monday as Tropical Storm Isaac barreled across the Gulf of Mexico and toward the U.S. mainland, picking up strength and threatening oil and refining operations. An explosion at a refinery in Venezuela also pushed prices higher.
By early afternoon in Europe, benchmark crude for October delivery was up 79 cents to $96.94 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell 12 cents to finish at $96.15 per barrel on the Nymex on Friday.
In London, Brent crude rose 54 cents to $114.13 on the ICE Futures exchange.
Oil analyst Stephen Schork said in an email commentary that he expects "much higher volatility this week" due to Tropical Storm Isaac, which weather forecasters said would pick up strength before striking as a Category 2 hurricane somewhere between New Orleans and the Florida Panhandle on Wednesday.
Schork worries that the storm will be a repeat of Hurricanes Katrina in 2005 and Gustav in 2008, damaging Gulf refineries and pipelines and disrupting oil tanker traffic.
As of Sunday, work had been suspended on rigs accounting for 24 percent of daily oil production in the U.S. portion of the Gulf and eight percent of daily natural gas production there, the federal Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement said.
Another factor pushing up prices was an explosion and fire that shut down operations at the Amuay refinery in western Venezuela, said Victor Shum, energy analyst at consultancy Purvin & Gertz in Singapore.
Amuay is among the world's largest refineries and is part of the Paraguana Refinery Complex, which also includes the adjacent Cardon refinery. Together, the refineries process about 900,000 barrels of crude per day and 200,000 barrels of gasoline.
In other Nymex trading, gasoline futures advanced 7.77 cents to $2.9882 per gallon, while heating oil rose 4.04 cents to $3.1591 per gallon. Natural gas rose 5.2 cents to $2.754 per 1,000 cubic feet.

When starting a real estate investing business, it?s always critical to decide where to buy real estate. ?The two main factors likely driving your decision are: Opportunity and Lifestyle. ?From an opportunity perspective, you need a ?farm area? big enough to satisfy your goals. ?Most successful real estate investors are opportunists, meaning they go where the opportunities are, near or far. ?Of course, that sometimes conflicts with your interests from a lifestyle perspective. ?From a lifestyle perspective, you likely want to stay as close to your office or home as possible. ?Plus, it?s easier to manage rehab projects and rental properties.
Where to buy real estate may also be impacted by where you already own other properties, in the case of rentals. ?If you happen to manage your own rentals, it?s of course easier to manage them if they?re close together. ?Of course, if you don?t manage your own rental properties, proximity to each other is less important.
If you?re serious about real estate investing, it?s critical to determine where you want to buy real estate so you can focus. ?Learn the area you plan to work well, and it will serve your business well. ?To learn about how to start or grow your real estate real estate investing career as part of the best investing team in America, please visitwww.uglyopportunities.com

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? Florida's former Republican Gov. Charlie Crist says he will be a speaker at the Democratic National Convention.
Crist said Monday that he will speak at next week's convention in Charlotte, N.C. He says he thinks highly of President Barack Obama's efforts to help Florida, citing his work to try to steer money for a bullet train to the state.
Crist announced Sunday that he is endorsing Obama. Republicans called the decision political opportunism and pointed out Crist has previously criticized the president on issues like his health care overhaul.
Crist changed his voter registration to no party affiliation after he dropped out of the 2010 Republican Senate primary and ran as an independent. Many speculate that he will return to politics as a Democrat and possibly challenge his Republican successor, Rick Scott.

Two opposing teams battle it out to regulate gene expression on the DNA playing field. One, the activators, keeps DNA open to enzymes that transcribe DNA into RNA. Their repressor opponents antagonize that effort by twisting DNA into an inaccessible coil around histone proteins, an amalgam called chromatin, effectively blocking access to DNA by enzymes that elongate an RNA strand.
Both teams maneuver by chemically modifying histones?the activators by decorating histones with acetyl groups?let's call them green flags?causing them to loosen their grip on DNA. The repressors retaliate by marking histones with red flags, often methyl groups, which call in de-acetylase enzymes to clip off the green flags, restore the chromatin barrier and end that round of gene expression. Disturbing this biochemical balance lies at the heart of many diseases, particularly cancer.
Recently, the lab of Jerry Workman, Ph.D., investigator at the Stowers Institute for Medical Research, reported in the journal Nature that a reserve of "pre-acetylated" histones sits on the chromatin sidelines ready to sub for histones whose green flags get clipped by repressors, a tactic aiding the activators called "histone exchange". In a companion study published in the Aug. 26, 2012 Advance Online Publication of Nature Structural & Molecular Biology the Workman lab now shows that a repressor called Set2 in yeast recruits a protein assistant to block the histone exchange. That study reveals a heretofore unknown mechanism to keep gene activation under control and ensure that erroneous transcription does not occur.
"Accurate gene expression is critical for normal cell function, and when this control is lost cells grow abnormally," says Workman. "These two studies identify mechanisms used by cells to regulate gene expression, which is important for our understanding of what goes wrong in diseases marked by unregulated cell growth, like cancer."
The study began when the group, in collaboration with Stowers proteomics experts Michael Washburn, Ph.D., and Laurence Florens, Ph.D., applied mass spectrometry analysis to identify any protein expressed in yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae that bound to chromatin in regions patrolled by Set2. Those regions were readily apparent by the presence of Set2's red flag methyl group planted in a specific histone protein interacting with DNA.
"We knew that Set2 added this mark in the middle and downstream parts of genes to recruit de-acetylases," says the study's lead author Michaela Smolle, Ph.D., a postdoctoral researcher in the Workman lab. "But the proteomic search allowed us to cast a wide net for other proteins associated with that mark?a bit like fishing."
Among the fish caught was a component of a yeast chromatin "remodeler" known as Isw1, providing circumstantial evidence that the Set2 red flag attracts Isw1 as well as de-acetylases. Additional genomic experiments evaluating the entire genome of a yeast mutant lacking Set2 supported that idea: not only were the red methyl flags missing but the chromatin landscape was devoid of Isw1 as well.
To assess Isw1's biological function the group exploited yet another yeast mutant, this one lacking the ISW1 gene itself. Microarray analysis of global transcription in ISW1 CHD1 mutants showed widely perturbed gene expression marked by aberrant expression of RNA snippets rather than complete transcripts. Biologists view the presence of such "cryptic transcripts" as indicators of cellular stress.
Analysis of acetylation and methylation patterns in chromatin of ISW1 mutants revealed the probable cause: mutants showed ramped up histone exchange activity marked by excessive levels green-flagged pre-acetylated histones along the length of many genes, a condition likely favoring initiation of truncated RNAs.
"Our work shows that the Set2 methylation mark plays two important roles to ensure that RNA transcription starts only at the beginning of the gene and not in the middle," says Workman. "On one hand, it recruits Isw1 to block incoming histones, and on the other it also recruits a deacetylase to remove any acetylation marks that might happen to have sneaked in."
The Workman lab uses yeast, fruit flies and mammalian cells to study multiple factors that activate and repress transcription. Thus far, they have characterized players in the repressive Set2 pathway primarily in yeast, in part because yeast represents an ideal organism for mutational analysis and has a fairly small genome?6,000 genes compared to the 25,000 or so in humans or mice.
Smolle notes that although yeast genomes are simpler, the principles that govern Set2 activity in yeast will likely hold true for its human counterparts, among them the human protein SETD2. "Yeast has a single methylase, while humans have several, and flies and humans have several Isw1-like proteins," she says. "While you cannot equate one with the other precisely, you can be reasonably sure that what happens in yeast happens in humans as well but tends to be more complicated."
Workman agrees, adding that these discoveries have significant implications for human disease. "Strikingly, the human homolog of Set2, SETD2, is implicated as a tumor suppressor in breast cancer and in renal carcinoma, and those cells are deficient in the SETD2 methylation mark," he says. "These findings strongly suggest that SETD2 could be important in controlling cell growth and preventing tumors. Thanks to yeast, we now know more about how Set2 does that."

Scores of people were killed in a Damascus suburb as government forces allegedly went on a house-to-house search, rebel forces say. NBC's Lester Holt reports.
By Khaled Yacoub Oweis, Reuters
AMMAN -- The bodies of at least 200 people were found in a town close to Damascus on Saturday, according to activists who said most appeared to have been killed by Syrian troops "execution style."
The deaths would bring the toll from an offensive by President Bashar al-Assad's forces on Daraya, a working class Sunni Muslim town on the southwestern edge of Damascus, to 270, according to a tally by opposition activists in the capital.
Abu Kinan, an activist in Daraya, said most of the victims were found in houses and basements of buildings and had been shot by troops conducting house-to-house raids.
Due to restrictions on non-state media, it was impossible to independently verify the accounts.
"In the last hour, 122 bodies were discovered and it appears that two dozen died from sniper fire and the rest were summarily executed by gunshots from close range," Kinan said.
"Assad's army has committed a massacre in Daraya."
The Daraya Coordination Committee activists' group said in a statement that among those found with shots to the head were eight members of the al-Qassaa family: three children, their father and mother and three other relatives.

Their bodies were found in a residential building near Mussab bin Umeir mosque in Daraya, the group said.
Video released by activists showed numerous bodies of young men side-by-side at the Abu Suleiman al-Darani mosque in Daraya, many with what looked like gunshot wounds to the head and chest.
"A massacre," said the voice of the man who appeared to be taking the footage.
"You are seeing the revenge of Assad's forces from the people of Daraya: more than 150 bodies on the floor of this mosque."
Mohammad Hur, another activist in Daraya, said 36 bodies of young men were found in the morning in one building, along with several badly wounded people who could not be transferred to hospitals in the area because the army had occupied them.
Watch World News videos on NBCNews.com
"We are in the process of identifying the bodies and documenting how they died. Initial evidence shows that they were mostly shot at close range in the face, neck and head, execution style," Hur said by telephone.
"Female members from at least two families say that soldiers shot their brothers in front of them," he added.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which is based in Britain and headed by dissident Rami Abdelrahman, said it had received reports of dozens of bodies found in Daraya, but it had not yet ascertained how they were killed.
The army overran Daraya, one of a series of large, mostly run-down Sunni Muslim towns that surround Damascus, on Saturday after three days of heavy bombardment that killed 70 people, according to opposition sources and residents who said most of the dead were civilians.
The attack on Daraya was part of an army campaign to regain control of the outskirts of the capital, a mixture of built up areas and farmland where rebels had regrouped and relaunched guerrilla attacks on Assad's forces.
Assad belongs to Syria's minority Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shi'ite Islam that has dominated power in Syria for the last five decades. Members of the country's Sunni majority are at the forefront of the uprising.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? On the eve of their national party conventions, Barack Obama and Mitt Romney are locked in a close race to amass the requisite 270 Electoral College votes for victory. And the contest is exactly where it was at the start of the long, volatile summer: focused on seven states that are up for grabs.
Neither candidate has a significant advantage in Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Ohio, Nevada, New Hampshire and Virginia, which offer a combined 85 electoral votes, according to an Associated Press analysis of public and private polls, spending on television advertising and numerous interviews with Republican and Democratic strategists in battleground states.
The analysis, which also took into account the strength of a candidate's on-the-ground organization and travel schedules, found that if the election were held today, Obama would have 19 states and the District of Columbia, offering 247 votes, solidly in his column or leaning his way, while Republican Romney would have 24 states with 206 votes.
Obama won all seven of the too-close-to-call states in 2008, and they are where the race will primarily be contested in the homestretch to the Nov. 6 election.
Ten weeks before Election Day, the AP analysis isn't meant to be predictive but rather is intended to provide a snapshot of a race that's been stubbornly close all year.
Among the unknowns that could shake up the electoral landscape before November: the latest unemployment figures that come out early next month, an unexpected foreign policy crisis in Syria or Iran and the outcome of the candidates' October debates.
Both sides are working to persuade the 23 percent of registered voters who said in an Associated Press-GfK poll that they are either undecided about the presidential race or iffy in their support for a candidate.
To woo them, the campaigns and political parties, along with allied groups with access to unlimited financial contributions, have already spent an astounding $540 million on television advertising, according to ad spending reports provided to the AP. And there's more to come.
Over the past three months, the campaign took a sharply negative turn, at times becoming nasty and personal.
Obama sought to define Romney early as a ruthless corporate raider for his time at the head of a private equity firm in Boston, and as an out-of-touch rich man keeping secrets about his wealth. Romney, in turn, worked to cast Obama as a failed president on a host of fronts, primarily the economy.
Both candidates have hit road bumps: Obama saw the unemployment rate rise to 8.3 percent and gave Republicans an opening to argue that he was unfriendly to small business. Romney had a widely panned foreign trip and made a series of potentially problematic comments, most recently joking about the debunked conspiracy theory regarding Obama's citizenship.
The national party conventions, starting with Republicans here, who convene Monday and start with a full schedule on Tuesday, and ending with Democrats the following week in Charlotte, N.C., will set the parameters of the fall campaign, and could provide each side with at least a temporary surge of support in national, if not battleground state, polls.
While Obama has a clear advantage given his incumbency, Romney does have a path to victory ? though it's a steep climb.
He must win most of the seven most competitive states ? Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Ohio, Nevada, New Hampshire and Virginia ? in order to reach the magic number. For instance, he can lose Ohio's 18 electoral votes and still become president if he wins the other six and hangs onto those already in his grasp. It's difficult to see a scenario where Romney wins without a victory in Florida, which offers 29 electoral votes.
Neither side expects a dramatically different playing field this fall.
"You know the states that are in play," said Obama's campaign manager Jim Messina. "I don't think there's going to be a surprise."
Romney's political director Rich Beeson makes the same point: "I don't think you're going to see the map go crazy."
Still, once their conventions are over, both campaigns will commission polls in the hardest-fought states to determine whether to shift their strategies. The candidates and their allied outside groups will pull money and manpower from states that are moving out of reach while relocating it to others they may now think they have a shot at winning.
"We're in a holding pattern," said Charlie Black, a veteran Republican campaign strategist and informal adviser to Romney.
Perhaps not for long.
With a huge cash advantage, Romney is considering trying to put more states in play ? and creating more state-by-state paths to reach 270. He's closely watching to see whether it's worth it to compete aggressively in Wisconsin, now that native son Rep. Paul Ryan is on the ticket.
The Republican National Committee and GOP allies have been advertising in the state in hopes of making it competitive; at least one poll shows they've had some success and the race appears close. Obama, who has a formidable campaign on the ground that includes the state's active labor and minority blocs, hasn't advertised there but might be forced to do so.
Romney also is eyeing a deeper investment in Michigan, where he campaigned Friday, and Pennsylvania, where Ryan was last week. Obama carried both states in 2008, but the GOP sees promise in the economically struggling northern industrial states, especially among working-class, white voters.
The Republican may have the money to expand the map.
August financial reports show that Romney's overall fundraising apparatus ? his campaign, the RNC and a separate joint-fundraising committee ? had roughly $177 million in the bank at the end of July. The reports are the most recent public data.
And to a greater degree than Obama, Romney also has amassed an untapped stockpile of general election money that he plans to use this fall. He can begin spending it immediately upon accepting the nomination for president at the convention's close Thursday night.
Obama and his comparable committees, in turn, had only about $127 million on hand, according to the most recent report.
He also must wait until he accepts his party's nomination on Sept. 6, the close of the Democratic convention, to start spending his general election money.
Unlike Romney, Obama isn't focused on expanding the map in earnest.
He's mostly looking to hang onto as many of the states he won four years ago, with Ohio being of particular focus. In recent months, Obama's standing there has strengthened, the unemployment rate has dropped and last week General Motors announced a $200 million expansion of a northeast Ohio plant to continue building the Chevrolet Cruze there.
Beyond playing defense, Obama's team is watching to see whether the political terrain becomes more favorable to him in Missouri in the aftermath of controversial abortion and rape comments by Rep. Todd Akin, a GOP Senate candidate.
The backlash has been fierce, and polls show Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill ? arguably the most vulnerable Senate Democrat ? having gained ground. Obama competed for Missouri four years ago but lost and hasn't run ads there this year. Romney has had a comfortable advantage there.
If they have the money to do it, both sides will engage in head-faking: spending money in places simply to force the other side to defend their home turf. For example, if Romney goes after Pennsylvania, which has voted Democratic in all recent presidential elections, Obama would likely have to spend money to defend it, limiting the amount of cash he'll have available to spend in more competitive states, like Florida or Virginia.

ASPEN, Colo. (AP) ? For a few hours, Lance Armstrong was back in his element ? on a bike and in a race.
No controversies, little fanfare.
The escape Saturday into the mountains around Aspen, Colo., comes a day after the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency disciplined Armstrong with a lifetime ban from professional cycling and vacated his seven Tour de France titles after deciding he used performance-enhancing drugs.
There were only a handful of fans at the start of the Power of Four mountain bike competition, a 36-mile trek that includes plenty of climbing.
Asked if he was ready, Armstrong smiled and said, "I hope so. ... This is going to be hard for all of us."
Decked out in black and gold and sporting a Livestrong emblem on his jersey, Armstrong tinkered with his bike and gave a kiss to girlfriend Anna Hansen before pedaling off.
His busy weekend includes a marathon Sunday. He may be banned from cycling, but it hasn't diminished his passion for competition.
These weekend races may have to suffice.
Armstrong, who retired a year ago and turns 41 next month, said Thursday he would no longer challenge USADA and declined to exercise his last option by entering arbitration. He denied again that he took banned substances in his career, calling USADA's investigation a "witch hunt" without any physical evidence.
USADA said its evidence came from more than a dozen witnesses "who agreed to testify and provide evidence about their firsthand experience and/or knowledge of the doping activity of those involved in the USPS conspiracy," a reference to Armstrong's former U.S. Postal Service cycling team.
The unidentified witnesses said they knew or had been told by Armstrong himself that he had "used EPO, blood transfusions, testosterone and cortisone" from before 1998 through 2005, and that he had previously used EPO, testosterone and Human Growth Hormone through 1996, USADA said. Armstrong also allegedly handed out doping products and encouraged banned methods ? and used "blood manipulation including EPO or blood transfusions" during his 2009 comeback race on the Tour de France.
USADA chief executive Travis Tygart described the investigation as a battle against a "win-at-all-cost culture," adding that the International Cycling Union was "bound to recognize our decision and impose it."
Fans defended Armstrong on Twitter, insisting his work with Livestrong trumps what he accomplished on a bike. His success helped sell millions of "Livestrong" yellow plastic bracelets as he promoted cancer awareness and research. He's raised nearly $500 million since the Lance Armstrong Foundation started in 1997.
On Friday alone, the foundation said it received 400 donations that totaled around $75,000.

It may look like an early prototype of the Power Glove, but this wearable "tricorder" is not only less embarrassing than the doomed Nintendo peripheral -- it's also quite a bit more advanced technologically. This second prototype of the medical gadget is home to a veritable arsenal of sensors, including an accelerometer, pressure and temperature modules. Eventually, Med Sensation hopes to place ultrasound pads on the fingertips, allowing physicians to peer inside the body while they poke and prod in an attempt to diagnose you. At the moment, the system is better suited for providing feedback -- guiding trainees in the proper techniques for giving exams. Ultimately though, the hope is to put these in (or would that be on?) the hands of average Joes and Janes. Individuals could then check for lumps or enlarged organs at home, without having to spend half the day sitting in a waiting room. For a brief demonstration, check out the video after the break.

Amazon is holding a press event on Sept. 6, in Santa Monica, Calif., and that probably means exactly what you think it means: That a new Kindle ??or two, or three ??is on the way.
Analysts have suggested that several?new Kindle models, including a 7-inch upgrade that people have dubbed "Kindle Fire 2," could be on the way.
Richard Shim,?an analyst at NPD DisplaySearch,?says?that his sources claim that there would be three flavors of?Kindle 2?hitting production lines this fall,?as CNET's Brooke Crothers points out???one with no camera, one with a camera, and one with a camera and 4G cellular?connectivity.
There could also be an 8.9-inch version of the tablet at the very end of the year, which would compete more?directly with the current?iPad, he added.
This speculation is based on?orders placed for components, so things could certainly change. But given the timing, we suspect that we'll be seeing at least one shiny new Kindle next month.
In addition to those LCD-screen touch?tablets, Amazon has been rumored to be working on a glowing-screen version of its popular e-ink Kindle. It was expected sooner, as Barnes & Noble released its own light-up Nook in July.
All that, and maybe Amazon will even reveal?its own?branded smartphone, too. (But ...?probably not.)
But no matter what we think will happen, we'll be in Santa Monica on Sept. 6 for Amazon's announcement.

Valuing the Elderly
The major objective of every in-home care carrier is to show the senior that they're valued despite their physical restrictions. These people were as soon as major contributors to the community and their past actions, sacrifices, and choices have helped in making it easy for culture to flourish. It's therefore fitting to show gratitude by taking care of them when the time comes that they can no longer care for themselves.
Why In-home? The senior can not move around as rapidly as they used to, and most would rather remain indoors than leave the conveniences of their homes. As a result, more and more families opt to choose in-home care companies to satisfy the requirements of their loved ones. This is a viable choice for those who do not have the time to look after their senior relatives because of work, school, and other activities, yet do not wish to deliver their grandparents or old moms and dads to senior homes.
Long-term Benefits. An in-home care franchise can benefit both the senior and the providers. It's not just about earning money, but it's also about delivering the required care that old people require. Due to the fact that everybody grows old, there's absolutely a reasonably stable need for in-home care services.
More than a Company
Care companies from home care franchises form extended family members for most elderly people. Due to the long periods of time they spend together, they are able to form a bond that is a healthy balance between expert and friendly relations. These companies can stand in for family members and buddies who may not constantly be available to offer the elderly the care and attention they need.
An elder care business is a company that aspires not just to make a profit and develop lasting growth and reliability, but also to show the senior that they're worth the time and added effort. For more info about in-home care companies, please go to ehow.com/how_4685690_start-elderly-home-care-business.html. Such a site can can aid in making the subject more lucid. With all things planned and organized. you are going to get the most out of your business and steer your way to a fulfilling success.

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (AP) ? Rodney King had been drinking and was on drugs when he plunged into a swimming pool and accidentally drowned in June, a coroner's report released Thursday concluded.
The report confirmed a previous police conclusion that King died by accident, and the case will be closed, Rialto police Capt. Randy DeAnda said.
"It concludes our investigation," he said. "Basically, our investigation revealed the same conclusion and now that we have the toxicology, it basically reinforces that."
King, whose videotaped beating by Los Angeles police in 1991 led to deadly rioting, had long struggled with addiction.
A call from King's fiancee brought police to his Rialto home at 5:30 a.m. on June 17. Officers pulled him from the bottom of the pool, and he was pronounced dead at a hospital.
Cynthia Kelley told authorities she was in bed when she was awakened and saw King at a patio door.
"She described him making grunting and growling sounds and having frothy secretions coming from his mouth," the report states.
When King fell over a planter, Kelley went for her cellphone to call for help. She heard a splash and by the time she got to the pool, King was face down in the deep end.
Kelley could not swim and attempted to revive King by prodding him with a pitchfork and hoe before authorities arrived, the report states.
The San Bernardino County coroner's report listed the cause of death as drowning "and the contributing cause was combined with ethanol (alcohol) and multiple drug toxicity," DeAnda said.
Toxicology tests showed that King had a blood-alcohol level of .06 and amounts of PCP, cocaine and marijuana in his system, the captain said.
"Mr. King was in a state of drug- and alcohol-induced delirium at the time of the terminal event and either fell or jumped into the swimming pool," DeAnda said. "Obviously, the effects of the drugs and alcohol combined precipitated some kind of cardiac arrhythmia, thus incapacitated Mr. King, and he was unable to save himself."
Arrhythmia is an irregular heartbeat.
A neighbor said after King's death that she had heard sobbing from his house earlier that morning. It sounded like someone "really crying, like really deep emotions. ... Like tired or sad, you know?" neighbor Sandra Gardea said.
The report details numerous injuries King sustained over his lifetime, including several birdshot pellets that remained in his body after being shot in 2007 by a shotgun.
King liked to skateboard and some of the injuries seen by medical examiners may have come from falls while playing, his brother Zhan Paul King told investigators.
King's death occurred just months after the 20th anniversary of the Los Angeles riot brought him renewed attention. In the intervening years he had struggled with substance abuse and had a string of arrests.
But, at the time, he had just published a book about his life and was upbeat.
"America's been good to me after I paid the price and stayed alive through it all," he told The Associated Press. "This part of my life is the easy part now."
It was an unusually positive view for a man who symbolized the problem of police brutality and had long since lost the $3.8 million he'd been awarded in a civil suit against the city over the beating.
Kelley was a juror on the civil trial.
In March 1991, the then-25-year-old King led authorities on a high-speed chase that ended on a darkened street.
He was stopped by four Los Angeles police officers who were videotaped striking him more than 50 times with batons, kicking him and shooting him with stun guns. He suffered 11 skull fractures, a broken eye socket and facial nerve damage.
A resident recorded the videotape the beating and it was played over and over for a year, inflaming racial tensions.
The officers' trial, which was moved to the predominantly white suburb of Simi Valley, ended on April 29, 1992. A jury with no black members acquitted three of the officers on state charges and a mistrial was declared for a fourth.
Within hours Los Angeles was engulfed in violence and flames. Fifty-five people died, more than 2,000 were injured and more than $1 billion in damage was done.
At the height of the rioting, King made his famous plea for peace, saying, "Can we all get along?"
