Notes From Priority Two Annual Networking Dinner | Small Business ...

Written By: Rachael Pearce, SMC Communications Support

I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to join Eileen Petrone, SMC?s Director of Human Resources Services, as her guest at the Priority Two Annual Networking Dinner. The event took place on Tuesday, January 15th at Northway Community Church in Wexford. Priority Two is a faith based, non-profit corporation that seeks to help people going through the difficult experience of employment transition. Priority Two?s foundation is ?maintaining priorities during crisis or transition to find success.? This Networking Dinner gave both Priority Two Program Alumni and current job seekers a chance to evaluate the state of Pittsburgh?s current job market, while making helpful connections with other attendees.

The keynote speaker of the evening was Alan Robertson, Publisher of Pittsburgh Business Times. Robertson gave an insightful message concerning both the economy and employment search within the Pittsburgh region. Attendees were given the opportunity to ask questions, have a professional picture taken, and enter a drawing to win books and resources for job searching.

The following were the main bullet points from Alan Robertson?s keynote speech at the Priority Two Annual Networking Dinner.

Why are we doing so well in Pittsburgh?

1. Marcellus Shale

-With Marcellus Shale in the area, it has helped the Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania economy boom. News such as the pending project for an Ethane Cracker Facility in Beaver County excites the region by promising the potential for 10,000 some jobs.

-The Marcellus Shale boom has allowed PA to become a leading U.S. exporter of natural gas due to its more convenient location to large, North Eastern cities.

2.? There is an increase in hiring in leisure, hospitality, education, health services, and manufacturing industries.

3. People are moving to Pittsburgh. This includes the ?boomerang effect? of people who grew up in the area who are coming back to call Pittsburgh their home once again. Also, the younger generation is moving here (or staying here) for the great job opportunities and the trendy, fun neighborhoods.

4. Employers are looking for people. Many businesses in the Pittsburgh and surrounding areas are growing and they?re looking for talented, skilled, employees.

For the active job seekers ?in attendance, Alan Robertson had a few inspirational tips:

4 Reasons Why Tomorrow Is Going To Be Better

1. Every ?no? is a step closer to a ?yes.? Remember to ask yourself each day, ?What did I do TODAY to help me reach my goal??

2. Smaller Chunks are easier to handle. Break your day up into smaller chunks of time and responsibilities so you don?t get overwhelmed. Robertson suggests making a list at the beginning of each day of what you?d like to accomplish and when. Cross things off the list as you finish them.

3. You know it?s not as bad as you think. Negative thoughts can lead to negative action. Robertson points out a very effective message:

4.?YOU are going to make it better
