Health and Fitness Facts and Myths Exposed | Free Press Release

Of course there are truths about health and fitness, but not all "lies" are actually untrue. Each person?s body reacts differently to exercise. It is not always true for all people. Everyone should deal with information and question truths on a case by case basis. You never know what may be uncovered by doing some research, so ideally you should take the time to research and learn. Here is some solidly researched information about health and fitness, and what is true and maybe? less than true.

You?ve probably heard that swimming is good for losing weight. This is a fallacy. Swimming has many benefits but losing pounds isn?t one of them. The simple reason for that has to do with the buoyancy of water. When you swim, the water supports your weight, and that means you will not be working as hard as you would be if you were jogging or running long distance. One myth that needs to be squashed now is that you have to work out hard to gain benefit from your exercise routine, this is not true, even simple exercise can give you big benefits. But the experience and wisdom of many states that you won?t know that until much later. You will find out the next day and possibly peaking the day after that. What this describes is someone who?s been inactive for a while and decides they need to hit the gym with gusto to get fit in a hurry, they often feel sore and give up shortly after. To avoid the above situation take it slow, don?t rush yourself and above all else consult your doctor first.

The mental horse power you?ll gain from your exercise routine is undisputable. In other words, working out helps to make your brain more powerful and operate at a higher level of performance.

Research has shown that regular exercise has a great effect on blood circulation. There is much research available that proves circulation will improve serotonin levels in the brain as well. Mental acuity is a proven benefit of increased serotonin levels in the brain. We find this increased mental acuity intriguing.

It is well worth it to learn as much as possible concerning what is true or not in health and fitness. Whether or not you realize it this is important. You?re making the extra effort to exercise, be sure you know how to do it right. This way you get the optimal benefit to your exercise program.

In Defense of the Four-Door Coupe

Audi A7 Tail

?

Just about a decade ago, the mainstream introduction of the contradictory phrase "four-door coupe" angered me. I distinctly remember testing the Mercedes-Benz CLS at its press launch thinking, "This is a pretty car, but why not just call it a sedan?" I doubted the long-term viability of the genre, but the world's oldest automaker enjoyed the last laugh, as countless imitators have since carved a niche for themselves by building similarly-themed slope-tailed sedans.

?

Last week I tested the $76,000 BMW 6-Series Gran Coupe, an attractive (if pricey) alternative to run-of-the-mill Bimmers. But I didn't fully grasp the genre's potential until I borrowed an Audi A7 the following week back at home. The key differentiator? This time I was able to strap in a baby seat and shuttle my six month-old around town... and in doing so, I didn't feel old. The Audi seemed strangely sleek for its size, and the surprising steering feel and transient handling response actually made this 4,210 lb four-door fun to drive.

?

If that's not a great excuse to buy into the silliness of an oxmoronic marketing phrase, I don't know what is.

McGill university student plan provides healthcare to rural areas with Windows Phone and Win 8

Those of us living in metropolitan areas don't think twice about our ease of access to medical care, but those in rural areas don't enjoy such easy access to a doctor. Abhijeed Kalyan and Shravan Narayan from McGill University in Canada are aware of this problem, and came up with a way for doctors to diagnose and treat patients from afar. Called Project Neem, it's got a hub and spoke organizational structure that puts a healthcare worker in every village and leverages the power of Windows Phone to connect them with medical staff in distant cities.

Participating healthcare workers are given basic medical training and a handheld loaded up with a custom app that identifies patients by scanning their national ID card and stores their pertinent medical info -- from temperature and blood pressure readings to a variety of symptoms. The app has a virtual human body on board that lets users tap parts of the anatomy to bring up a series of symptoms that can be selected to provide treating physicians with the info they need. That information is stored in the cloud and accessed by doctors through a Windows 8 app, who then can relay appropriate treatments to the local healthcare worker. Now all we need is someone to make a real-world tricorder, and we'll truly be able to bring medical care to the masses, wherever they may be.

Macaw Mobile Health & Fitness App from U.S. Preventive Medicine Wins CTIA E-Tech Award

Download Macaw Free for iPhone and Android

(PRWEB) May 24, 2012

U.S. Preventive Medicine?s Macaw?, enabled by Qualcomm Life Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Qualcomm Incorporated, was named the winner in the Mobile Applications: Health, Wellness and Fitness category of CTIA?s Emerging Technology (E-Tech) Awards. In its seventh year, the CTIA E-Tech Awards honor the industry?s most innovative wireless products and services in the areas of mobile apps, consumer electronics, enterprise and vertical markets and infrastructure. Winners were announced at International CTIA WIRELESS? 2012 taking place earlier this month in New Orleans.

Unlike other available health and fitness apps, Macaw is based on the clinical science of preventive medicine and is universally designed for people who exercise regularly as well as those who are novices when it comes to physical activity. By leveraging Qualcomm Life?s expertise in wireless technology, Macaw will transform a smartphone into the ultimate personal health monitor, connecting an individual?s health apps and wireless devices for tracking weight, fitness, overall activity and biometrics ? including pedometers, glucose meters, activity armbands, scales, labs, sleep managers, mobile weight loss apps and blood pressure cuffs ? into a single app for complete tracking.

Macaw currently allows integration with the Fitlinxx Actiped+ all-day activity monitor, WorkSmart Labs? weight loss and fitness app Noom Weight Loss and Withings WiFi Body Scale. Macaw users are able to track their physical activity, nutrition, progress and health knowledge while engaging in games that unlock prizes.

Macaw is available for download on the iPhone App Store and Android Market. You can also stay up-to-date by following Macaw on Facebook, Twitter (@MacawApp) and YouTube.

?CTIA is pleased to congratulate U.S. Preventive Medicine and Qualcomm Life on winning the CTIA E-Tech Award for representing the best in wireless innovation for mobile applications in health, wellness and fitness,? said Robert Mesirow, vice president and show director for CTIA.

Nearly 250 entries across 15 awards categories were judged by a panel of media and industry analysts and scored on innovation, functionality, technological importance, implementation and overall ?wow? factor.

?This award helps to validate our mission of utilizing technology to transform the way people think about and manage their health,? said Christopher Fey, founder, CEO and chairman of U.S. Preventive Medicine. ?Through Macaw, U.S. Preventive Medicine is making it easier for people to engage in actions to improve their health while on the go. Macaw enables people to take control, improve their own health status, and possibly reduce their health care costs along the way.?

Yale grad?s final essay gets new life after writer?s death

This undated photo released by the Keegan family shows Marina Keegan, of Wayland??A 22-year-old Yale gradate, Marina Keegan, who penned her life's lessons in a final column for the Yale Daily News, died just days after commencement. But the words of her work, "The Opposite of Loneliness," have lived on.

The Massachusetts resident died in a car crash on her way to a vacation house on Cape Cod when the driver, Michael Gocksch, lost control of the car. Gocksch survived, but Keegan was pronounced dead on the scene.

The young writer was already making a name for herself in the literary world. She had published stories in the New York Times and had a job with the New Yorker she was about to start.

News of her loss led the Yale newspaper to put Keegan's final essay on the Web, and searches on her essay began to grow as Keegan's future colleagues linked to it on Twitter. Yahoo! searches for "Marina Keegan" shot up in one day, along with "Marina Keegan obituary," and "Marina Keegan Yale."

Some tweeted obits from the New Yorker and the Paris Review, and others mentioned her journalism that took on Wall Street, and her ambitions as a playwright. But most simply linked to Keegan's final column, and let her speak for herself.

The class of 2012 member wrote to her fellow grads, "We don't have a word for the opposite of loneliness, but if we did, I'd say that's how I feel at Yale. How I feel right now. Here. With all of you. In love, impressed, humbled, scared. And we don't have to lose that." She added, "We're in this together, 2012. Let's make something happen to this world."

Comments to the essay on Yale's site are heartfelt. This one from hzaleskimd is typical: "After reading the above piece, I can tell that she was a wonderful, caring and insightful person. Her loss is tragic, not solely for the family but for all of us and those whose lives in the future she would have affected."

From scientist_always_in_training, "As a young Yale alumn, this piece is so very real and heart-wrenching. My deepest condolences to Marina's family and friends. May Marina's memory live on, and remind us just to what degree life is precious."

Keegan's advice was wise beyond her years. She wrote,

"What we have to remember is that we can still do anything. We can change our minds. We can start over. Get a post-bac or try writing for the first time. The notion that it's too late to do anything is comical. It's hilarious. We're graduating college. We're so young. We can't, we MUST not lose this sense of possibility because in the end, it's all we have."

Keegan left her fellow grads with this haunting message, "We're so young. We're so young. We're twenty-two years old. We have so much time."

Microsoft's New Terms of Service to Block Class Action Suits

[unable to retrieve full-text content]

Source: tech.originalsignal.com --- Sunday, May 27, 2012
Microsoft will be making use of the ruling by the Supreme Court to block class action suits against the corporation. A ruling last year allowed companies to settle complaints with customers on an individual basis, but does not support class action suits by a group of complainants. Microsoft has already begun changing over the user agreements to reflect the new policy. "Our policy gives Microsoft powerful incentives to resolve any dispute to the customer's satisfaction before it gets to arbitration and our arbitration provisions will be among the most generous in the country". HOOVER, Ala. (AP) ? Vanderbilt pulled off a triple steal in a five-run ninth inning that included six stolen bases as the Commodores ran their way to an 8-6 victory over Florida in the Southeastern Conference tournament Saturday.

Anthony Gomez singled home the go-ahead run ? and then stole second, third and home ? for Vanderbilt (33-25), which is aiming for its first SEC tournament title since 2007. The Commodores face Mississippi State in Sunday?s championship game.

Vanderbilt fueled the comeback win over the Gators (42-18) with its flurry of stolen bases that included the triple steal with the bases loaded when Gomez made his dash to home plate.

Florida scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth and had the bases loaded before Vanderbilt reliever Drew VerHagen got Justin Shafer to pop up to right field on his lone pitch to end the game.

Terps women fall to Northwestern, 9-7, in NCAA lacrosse semifinal

STONY BROOK, N.Y.?

It wasn?t for the national championship this time, but the Maryland and Northwestern women?s lacrosse teams staged another classic NCAAtournament showdown Friday night at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium.

The two traded national titles the last two years, but this time, defending champion Northwestern earned only a trip to the title game by slipping past the Terrapins, 9-7, in the semifinal.

Taylor Thornton, one of five finalists for the Tewaaraton Award , scored the eventual game winner to give No. 2 Northwestern an 8-6 lead with 16:19 to go and added an insurance goal with 1:26 left.

Shannon Smith, the 2011 Tewaaraton winner, who had four goals in last year?s 8-7 title-game win over the Terrapins, didn?t score a goal but dished out four assists. Wildcats goalie Brianne LoManto made only five saves but made point-blank stops against Terps attackers Kristy Black and Katie Schwarzmann to help hold Maryland scoreless for the final 13:37.

The No. 3 Terrapins (19-4) got off to a quick start but struggled with possession during the second half, especially in a key stretch when the Wildcats scored four straight times. Northwestern dominated the draws in the second half winning seven of eight and finished with 13 of 18.

?Draws were really important,? Schwarzmann said, ?and credit to Northwestern. They did a great job coming up with those and really maintinaing possession when they had the ball. We tried to fight for those and we could have done a better job obviously, but when we had possession, we had a few too many turnovers and just couldn?t do what we needed to do.?

Northwestern (20-2) will meet No. 4 Syracuse for the national championship Sunday at 8 p.m. at LaValle Stadium. The Orange earned its first appearance in the final with an upset of No. 1 Florida in Friday night?s other semifinal, rallying from seven goals down to win 14-13 in double overtime.

The Wildcats, who resurrected their program in 2002 after nine years of club status, will be aiming for their seventh title in eight years against a Syracuse team they edged 11-9 in overtime early in the season.

The two most successful teams in NCAA women?s lacrosse history have met three straight times on Memorial Day weekend with the Terps winning the 2010 title and the Wildcats taking the title back last season. Between them, they have won 15 of the last 20 Division I titles. Maryland has 10 titles overall, including seven in a row.

The teams were tied at every point Friday until Maryland took a 6-4 lead on Schwarzmann?s free-position goal. The Wildcats never lost their poise.

?We?ve been in that position so many times this year,? Smith said, ?I knew it was going to come down to getting the draw control. We were running fine on offense. We were patient, looking for the open cutter. Every person that was in on the offense did a phenomenal job with cutting, keeping their defenders busy and allowing our offense to move.?

The Wildcats quickly turned the momentum and scored four straight times, the biggest run of the game. Smith fed Kara Mupo, Amanda Macaluso scored a free-position goal, Smith fed Lacey Vigmostad and Thorton made it an 8-6 lead on an unassisted goal.

Schwarzmann, also a Tewaaraton finalist, brought the Terps within one on a free-position goal with 13:37 to go.

Maryland had an excellent chance to tie when Kelly McPartland, on a free-position, opted to pass to Kristy Black rather than shoot. Black, open on the left side of the crease, had the angle but LoManto made the point-black stop with 11:53 to go and made another against Schwarzmann with 6:53 to go.

?One of the things I?ve learned throughout 10 years of playing goal is it?s not how many saves you have in a game sometimes, it?s when you have the saves,? LoManto said. ?We all want to make a lot of saves and, of course, you may not make every save you want, so you try to stay patient and confident and try to make those big saves.?

The Terps had enough trouble getting possesion, but they hurt themselves when they had to play two players down for two minutes, starting at the 4:34 mark after yellow cards on McPartland and on the Maryland bench. That helped the Wildcats scored their last goal and run out most of the rest of the time.

Wash. State loses one recruit; College hoops recruiting notes

Two incoming recruits from Westwind Prep (AZ), center Richard Peters?and wing DeMarquise Johnson?both were expected to be part of the groundwork that head coach Ken Bone was setting at Washington State going forward. Now, Peters has apparently failed to qualify, and will be headed to a junior college, while Cougars? fans are still holding out hope that Johnson will be able to be on the squad next year.

Washington State has compensated for the loss of Peters by adding Iowa State transfer Jordan Railey and junior college post James Hunter, but the former Oklahoma commit Peters was considered to be a big man with potential going forward. The same can be said for Johnson, who might be the best pure talent on Washington State?s roster, if he qualifies. It seems as if Washington State fans will be holding their breath for awhile, as the NCAA has been known to drag such issues out for months.

In other news from the recruiting trail:

  • Fordham is still trying to find their role in a re-formulated Atlantic-10, and they recently put out a press release detailing the four players who signed with their program going forward. 6?-8? power forward Travion Leonard, 6?-1? point guard Jermaine Myers, 6?-3? shooting guard Mandell Thomas and 6?-9? power forward Ryan Rhoomes are the newcomers announced by the Rams program. Rhoomes, was originally set for TCU this season, but was not able to play following a prep school season at NIA Prep (NJ). If he can shake off the rust, he?s the headliner of this group.
  • The loss of guard Willie Moore (Oregon) and forward Donovon Jack (Penn State) from the initial recruiting class at Duquesne will have to be overcome, but new coach Jim Ferry has inked four new players during his short time at the helm. Junior college guard Marvin Binney and high school guards Jeremiah Jones and Derrick Colter cast their lot with the program, while former Baylor commit (from several years ago) small forward Quevyn Winters is also set for the program. There wasn?t much time to wrangle this group together, but Ferry did what he could.
  • Both Boise State and Tulsa each have some buzz with recent players they snagged. 6?-9 forward?Vukasin Vujovic will join the Broncos from Serbia, where he?averaged?16 points and 5 rebounds on a junior team of Partizan, a Euroleague member. He?s a power forward with national team experience. Meanwhile, Rashad Ray of Walker (LA) has signed with Tulsa. He?s a 5?-11? point guard that averaged 18 points and 7 assists according to a press release. According to Tulsa, Ray picked them over UTEP, Tulane and Louisiana Tech.

Movie Review: 'Mighty Fine' | Movies & TV | Arts & Entertainment ...

By Joe Bendel Created: May 26, 2012 Last Updated: May 27, 2012

Moving to New Orleans? Well, laissez le bon temps rouler, unless you happen to be an awkward Jewish high school student from Brooklyn. In that case, it might be somewhat daunting. The Fine sisters find themselves in such a situation, but they will experience far more angst rooted in their father?s erratic anger in Debbie Goodstein-Rosenfeld?s partly biographical Mighty Fine, which opens this Friday in New York.

Joe Fine was a swaggering young enlisted man in World War II when he met Stella, a beautiful Jewish teenager whom a neighbor literally hid in a hole on his property during the war. Their attraction was immediate, and her devotion would be almost total. In fact, her reluctance to stand up to Fine?s increasingly frequent explosions of anger causes resentment among her daughters.

    \>");

Maddie is the older, attractive one, who can adapt to any new environment fairly easily through her looks and charm. Natalie is the younger, bookish one, who narrates the film looking back from an adult vantage point. The fact that Janeane Garofalo supplies these voice-overs does not exactly do the character or actor Jodelle Ferland any favors, subconsciously making most of the audience less inclined to be sympathetic.

At first, the move south appears to be a good thing, but Fine?s textile business (the Mighty Fine label) is on life support. When the federal tax credit he was banking on is postponed, the writing is on the wall. Not surprisingly, this pushes Fine to his breaking point. Though he is not yet physically abusive outright, the sisters begin to worry Fine might finally hurt one of them, or himself.

Written and produced in the spirit of forgiveness, the film never condemns Fine for his weaknesses, nor does it ever shy away from the uncomfortable reality of his tempestuous behavior. It is an honest and sensitive film, which is commendable, but not necessarily sufficient.

While viewers feel for the Fines, all of them, their story falls into a rather predictable pattern?their father loses his cool, tries to make it up to the family with some form of extravagance, only to get worked up again. Maybe it is rather true to life, but as cinema it gets laborious.

A fair number of motley subplots are also left dangling, such as the underworld figures Fine approaches to set an insurance fire at his factory. Evidently, should you ever get mixed up with gangsters, if you just ignore them they will go away.

For some this will be a minor quibble, but it seems utterly bizarre that Goodstein-Rosenfeld would set Mighty in New Orleans but not employ any of the local music. That is a real shame because the sounds are so great, and the local musicians could definitely use a gig.

Regardless of the film?s faults, Mighty Fine boasts some of executive producer Chazz Palminteri?s best work. Completely eschewing shtick and sentimentally, it is a gutty yet uncommonly human performance.

In contrast, co-executive producer Andie MacDowell is more than a bit mannered as the ever-loyal Stella. Still, her real-life daughter Rainey Qualley is a forceful, dynamic presence as Maddie. Though somewhat mousy by design, Ferland?s Natalie is quite engaging, as well.

Mighty Fine could not possibly be more earnest. Its design team also has a good eye for period details and overall ambiance. Still, a bit of tension-breaking levity and some funky NOLA tunes would not have undermined the central drama. Respectable but wearying, Mighty Fine opens this Friday (May 25) in New York at the AMC Empire and AMC Village.

Weakened Bud brushes Mexico's Pacific coast

(AP) PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico - Driving rain pelted Mexico's Pacific coast early Saturday as a weakened Tropical Storm Bud moved by a string of laid-back beach resorts and small mountain villages south of Puerto Vallarta.

Emergency officials were on high alert for flooding and mudslides despite the storm's decreasing speed and power.

The National Hurricane Center in Miami, Florida, said that maximum sustained winds that were once blowing at 115 mph had slowed to 60 mph by Friday night. The government of Mexico changed the hurricane warning for the coast of Mexico from Manzanillo to Cabo Corrientes to a tropical storm warning. Hurricane watches were also discontinued.

Heavy rain started Friday night in Puerto Vallarta and rainfall was expected to accumulate from 6 to 10 inches in many spots. Mexican authorities canceled school in 11 communities expected to be hit by heavy rains in Jalisco state. Emergency workers prepared emergency shelters, many of them in empty school classrooms.

The state was placed on high alert as the storm center neared land, and emergency officials in Puerto Vallarta said they were closely monitoring villages that had been hit by flooding and mudslides in previous hurricanes and tropical storms.

But on Friday night the sea along the city's famous beachfront appeared calm. Swimming was temporarily banned as a precaution.

Rains and 6-foot high waves pelted Melaque, a beach town on the Bahia de Navidad, about 60 mph east of the sparsely populated stretch of coast where the storm's center was expected to come ashore during the night.

Category 2 Hurricane Jova hit the area in October, killing six people and flooding parts of Melaque and neighboring Barra de Navidad.

"There was a lot of flooding in the whole area, and we lost electricity," recalled Rafael Galvez, manager of the Hotel Bahia in Melaque. But this week, he said, only seven of his hotel's 26 rooms were occupied, and none of the hotel's guests were planning to leave.

Streets in some coastal towns were filled with water.

The hurricane center said the storm could brush land then make a U-turn and head back out into the Pacific. Rain, rather than wind, could be the big threat, with the center warning of the "potential for life-threatening mudslides" in steep terrain inland.

The government of Jalisco state prepared hundreds of cots and dozens of heavy vehicles such as bulldozers that could be needed to move debris.

A separate storm was pounding much of Cuba and the Bahamas on Friday. Cuba's civil defense agency reported that a French citizen, Alain Manaud, and Silvestre Fortun Alvarez of Cuba were missing after trying to cross rain-swollen rivers, according to the government's Prensa Latina news agency. It said a search for them was continuing.

An official at the French Embassy in Havana said Manaud was 66 and had lived in Cuba for several years. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to comment publicly.

The agency quoted government meteorologists as saying more than 20 inches of rain had fallen on parts of the central province of Sancti Spiritus.

The hurricane center reported that the system had about a 70 percent chance of becoming a tropical or subtropical cyclone.

Off the Atlantic coast of the U.S., there were tropical storm warnings for the Southeast coast from northeastern Florida to South Carolina as a cluster of thunderstorms gathered strength and was expected to become Tropical Storm Beryl over the Memorial Day weekend.

Etan Patz case: NJ man charged with murder

The former construction worker and father to a college-aged daughter confessed to killing Etan Patz, who disappeared from New York City more than three decades ago. NBC's Ron Allen reports.

By Jonathan Dienst and Shimon Prokupecz, NBCNewYork.com

A former bodega stock clerk arrested for allegedly luring 6-year-old Etan Patz off a SoHo street and strangling him in a basement has been placed on suicide watch at a hospital as a precaution, NBC 4 New York has learned.

Pedro Hernandez, 51, was arraigned from Bellevue Hospital via video feed on a single charge of second-degree murder. The charge comes 33 years to the day that Patz disappeared off a SoHo street in a tragic case that mystified New York City for decades.

Read the criminal complaint against Pedro Hernandez

According to the criminal complaint, Hernandez told police he strangled Patz and placed him inside a plastic bag, causing his death. His court-appointed lawyer, Harvey Fishbein, told the court that Hernandez is a schizophrenic and had both auditory and visual hallucinations. Fishbein requested hearing to determine his client's mental fitness.

Hernandez is in isolation and receiving a medical evaluation at the hospital. Another source told NBC 4 New York that this evaluation is precautionary and that such extra steps in a case like this are often routine.?

From the first database for missing children to amber alerts, the Etan Patz case spurred new technologies to aid authorities and the public in locating children who disappeared. NBC's Chris Jansing reports.

    For more, visit NBCNewYork.com

Relatives have said Hernandez has a history of some mental issues.

Patz vanished on his way to a school bus in a case that drew international attention and changed the way parents felt about letting their young children go off alone.

Police said Hernandez had admitted to luring Patz into a bodega where he worked, near the boy's house, and choking him to death in the basement.????

Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said police focused on Hernandez, who now lives in Maple?Shade, N.J., after the Missing Persons Squad received a tip from someone who remembered Hernandez speaking of having killed a child.

"In the years following Etan's disappearance, Hernandez had told a family member, and others, that he had 'done a bad thing' and killed a child in New York," Kelly said.

A former bodega stock clerk has been arrested for allegedly kidnapping and killing 6-year-old Etan Patz in New York City in 1979. WNBC-TV's Jonathan Dienst reports.

Based on that information, police went to question Hernandez.

Kelly said Hernandez, who worked at the bodega for about a month, confessed to police after he was picked up Wednesday night. Some of the interviews were conducted at the scene of the crime, Kelly said.

Kelly said the suspect had not given a reason for attacking Patz and said there was "no reason at this time" to suspect the boy was sexually abused. He said it was "unlikely" Patz's remains would ever be found and that Hernandez told them he put the boy's body in the trash.

Watch US News videos on msnbc.com

Hernandez's lawyer on Friday asked reporters to be respectful of some of Hernandez's relatives assembled at the courthouse, including his wife, daughter and another man, who huddled together on a wooden bench, turning away interview requests for more than an hour. ? ? ?

"It's a tough day. The family is upset. Please give them some space,'' Fishbein said.

His sister, Maria, who did not want her last name used, told NBC 4 New York on?Thursday that her heart ached over the news of her brother's arrest and said she couldn't believe it. She said Hernandez had three children of his own and came from a family of 12 that emigrated from Puerto Rico in 1973.

Mayor Bloomberg said Thursday that the disappearance of Patz "broke the hearts of millions" across the nation, especially parents, and expressed sympathy again for the boy's family.

"I certainly hope that we are one step closer to bringing them some measure of relief," he said.

Manhattan District Attorney Cy Vance had pledged to reopen the decades-old cold case when he took office in 2010.

See a timeline of the case here

The exhaustive search for Patz was renewed several weeks ago when police dug up the basement of a handyman's workshop near where Patz disappeared. A new layer of concrete had been laid over the foundation of the basement shortly after the boy vanished.

That search yielded no new evidence.

A lawyer for the handyman, Othniel Miller, said his client is "relieved by these developments, as he was not involved in any way with Etan Patz's disappearance."

One other man had remained a longtime possible suspect: Jose Ramos, a drifter and onetime boyfriend of Patz's baby sitter. But there was no hard evidence linking Ramos to the crime.

He is in prison in Pennsylvania on a separate case.

The boy's parents, Stan and Julie Patz, were reluctant to move or even change their phone number in case their son tried to reach out. Stan Patz had his son declared legally dead in 2001 so he could sue Ramos, who has never been criminally charged with the boy's death and denies harming the boy. A civil judge in 2004 found Ramos to be responsible for the child's death.

Asteroid nudged by sunlight: Most precise measurement of Yarkovsky effect

    Friday, May 25, 2012

Scientists on NASA's asteroid sample return mission, Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, Security, Regolith Explorer (OSIRIS-REx), have measured the orbit of their destination asteroid, 1999 RQ36, with such accuracy they were able to directly measure the drift resulting from a subtle but important force called the Yarkovsky effect ? the slight push created when the asteroid absorbs sunlight and re-emits that energy as heat.

"The new orbit for the half-kilometer (one-third mile) diameter 1999 RQ36 is the most precise asteroid orbit ever obtained," said OSIRIS-REx team member Steven Chesley of the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif. He presented the findings May 19 at the Asteroids, Comets and Meteors 2012 meeting in Niigata, Japan.

Observations that Michael Nolan at Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico made in September 2011, along with Arecibo and Goldstone radar observations made in 1999 and 2005, when 1999 RQ36 passed much closer to Earth, show that the asteroid has deviated from its gravity-ruled orbit by roughly 100 miles, or 160 kilometers, in the last 12 years, a deviation caused by the Yarkovsky effect.

The Yarkovsky effect is named for the nineteenth-century Russian engineer who first proposed the idea that a small rocky space object would, over long periods of time, be noticeably nudged in its orbit by the slight push created when it absorbs sunlight and then re-emits that energy as heat.

"The Yarkovsky force on 1999 RQ36 at its peak, when the asteroid is nearest the sun, is only about a half ounce ? about the weight of three grapes on Earth. Meanwhile, the mass of the asteroid is estimated to be about 68 million tons. You need extremely precise measurements over a fairly long time span to see something so slight acting on something so huge."

Nolan and his team measured the distance between the Arecibo Observatory and 1999 RQ36 to an accuracy of 300 meters, or about a fifth of a mile, when the asteroid was 30 million kilometers, or 20 million miles, from Earth.

"That's like measuring the distance between New York City and Los Angeles to an accuracy of two inches, and fine enough that we have to take the size of the asteroid and of Arecibo Observatory into account when making the measurements," Nolan said.

Chesley and his colleagues used the new Arecibo measurements to calculate a series of 1999 RQ36 approaches closer to Earth than 7.5 million kilometers (4.6 million miles) from the years 1654 to 2135. There turned out to be 11 such encounters.

By combining the radar results from Arecibo Observatory with infrared results from NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope, the scientists also learned that asteroid 1999 RQ36 is very light ? it has around the same density as water, Chesley reported.

"This study is an important step in better understanding the Yarkovsky effect ? a subtle force that contributes to the orbital evolution of new Near-Earth Objects," said Dante Lauretta, the mission's principal investigator and professor of planetary science at the University of Arizona.

Lauretta added that "this information is critical for assessing the likelihood of an impact from our target asteroid and provides important constraints on its mass and density, allowing us to substantially improve our mission design."

The OSIRIS-REx spacecraft is to launch in 2016, reach asteroid (101955) 1999 RQ36 in 2019, examine it up close during a 505-day rendezvous, then return at least 60 grams (~1.9 ounces) of it to Earth in 2023.

"In addition to the exciting Yarkovsky results, the low density shows that 1999 RQ36 is probably a loose aggregate of rocks--a so called rubble pile," said Jason Dworkin, the mission's project scientist and Chief of Astrochemistry at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. "This makes it an ideal target for OSIRIS-REx to collect loose surface material."
