Dr. Cram explains the effects of consuming too much sugar. | Cram ...

Too Much Sugar?

We all know that eating too much sugar is bad for us but how much is too much and what does it really do to our bodies? ?It is shocking to note that most of us eat 150 lbs of sugar a year, and teens tend to consume up to 230 lbs of sugar a year. ?the right amount of sugar intake is really around 6-9 teaspoons a day maximum. ?This would translate to about 40 lbs a year. ?Mounting evidence shows that sugar plays a major role in obesity, heart disease, and cancer. It can also impact how you look or feel, doing damage to your skin or altering your mood.

One of the worst offenders are sugar laden drinks. ?These provide high calories yet do not satisfy hunger or thirst, so more food and drink will still need to be consumed. ?(Think sodas, Fruit drinks and ?special coffee drinks?). ?Diet drinks are not better, See upcoming newsletter for more on artificial sweeteners.

Here are 10 health consequences from high sugar consumption
#1. Obesity
#2. Type 2 Diabetes
#3. Acne
#4. Heart disease
#5. Depression
#6. Yeast infections
#7. Cancer
#8. Decreased immunity
#9. Decreased cognition (ability to think and concentrate)
#10. Decreased quality of sleep

For more detailed research on the above google effects of sugar on the body, or go to www.pubmed.gov and search sugar.

With Halloween just around the corner consider some ways to protect your family from a massive sugar load. ?If they are going to eat candy limit the amount per day. ?Also decrease other ?sources of sugar in their day, drink water instead of Pop and juice. ?Because high sugar intake decreases your immune function and increases inflammation, should you or your child come down with something, cut out sugar till you recover. ?Don?t leave the candy out in your site, put it away and you will be less likely to eat it. ?Only eat the treats that you REALLY like, get rid of the rest, just because it was free doesn?t mean it has to be consumed. ?Choose treats with less sugar. Compared to a regular size Milky Way at about 228 calories, a Tootsie Roll Pop has only 60 calories. Other lower calorie candies are hard candies like lifesavers that can be purchased as individually wrapped and gummie bears, licorice, and jelly beans that also come in an assortment of flavors and small packets. Small packages of animal crackers as well as small boxes of raisins at 45 calories each are also good treats that children can enjoy without high sugar content.

If you?re set on shelling out something sweet, here?s the caloric info:
? Fun/snack size Snickers ? 72 calories
? Fun/snack size Baby Ruth ? 85 calories
? Fun/snack size M&Ms ? 90 calories
? Fun/snack size Butterfinger ? 100 calories
Eat one of each (approx. 350 calories total), and a person would need to walk briskly for over an hour and a half to burn them off!
