Germany-based renewable power developer juwi has unveiled an off-grid renewable energy project in Egypt, which includes a solar power plant, a wind power facility and 500kW battery storage system.
Electricity generated by the project will be employed for the extraction of groundwater in the oasis of Wadi El-Natrun, halfway between Cairo and Alexandria.
A 50kW photovoltaic power plant and a 48kW wind generating units are monitored and steered from Germany using a remote control system for real time identification and resolution of contingencies.
Commenting on the project Juwi Off-Grid section head Fabian Jochen shed light on the hard work that went behind the installation of the project.
"Putting the system into operation after two weeks of hard work was an emotional moment.
In the middle of the night, in the headlight of a pick-up truck, we activated the pumps for the very first time - and the water welted," said Jochen.
juwi's Norbert Borchert added, "Thanks to the new hybrid system the old diesel generator has become obsolete.
"That is good news for the environment and additionally saves fuel costs."
