Set Newsletters and Other "Smart Labels" to Automatically Skip Gmail's Inbox

Set Newsletters and Other "Smart Labels" to Automatically Skip Gmail's InboxA while back, Gmail introduced "Smart Labels" for bulk email, notifications, forums, and social updates. You can't edit these filters, but you can automatically archive matching messages, so those updates don't fill up your inbox.

I personally like subscribing to daily deals newsletters and other promotions, but I don't like that they show up in my inbox. I want them out of the way where I can peruse them at my leisure. You can view and delete Gmail's smart label filters in the Filters section of Gmail's settings, but you can't edit them?however, there is a slightly hard-to-find option for automatically archiving those messages.

First, go to your inbox and click on the label you want to tweak in the left-hand sidebar. In my case, that's "Promotions." You'll then see all the messages marked with that label, but in the top right-hand corner of your inbox, you'll find a checkbox that says "Archive Incoming Promotions (skip the inbox)." Click it, and those newsletters will stay out of your way until you want them.
