Leave the Couch Behind and Start Shedding Pounds | Calorie ...

Many of us struggle with either maintaining our healthy weight, or taking off those stubborn pounds. Conventional wisdom holds that the most reliable way to shed those extra pounds is an equal mix of healthy eating and physical exercise. The challenge of weight loss is two-fold: getting started and staying motivated.

If you?re not the kind of person who likes to hit the treadmill, there are many ways to get in enough physical exercise to start losing weight. Surely there is some activity that you haven?t tried before that you?re just aching to attempt. Begin by surveying your options, and then get started!

Trying a new sport is one great option for the adventurous. For example, fencing is a sport that has a great appeal for men and women alike. You may think of Jack Sparrow and swashbuckling when it comes to fencing, but it?s actually very strategic, like a ?mental chess.? Trying fencing is a workout for your body and your mind. When starting with fencing, you need a few basic pieces of equipment, including a fencing jacket, gloves, a fencing mask, and of course, your weapon. Once you?re ?suited up,? you?re ready to go!

Checking with your local community center or YMCA is a good start for trying out different and interesting sports at a reasonable price. If dancing sounds more appealing than sports, check with local dance studios for beginner lessons. If you can get your partner on board, taking a ballroom dancing class might even spark up the romance a bit.

Once you have a physical activity in mind, you can start by taking a few steps to ensure that your foray into exercise is both safe and successful.

Pace yourself: getting in shape is much easier when you treat it like a marathon, rather than a sprint. Ease into your workout slowly, and don?t overdo it.
Set reasonable goals: the research is clear ? those who set goals are more likely to get the results they want. Pick a small goal when getting started, and then revise your goals as you make progress.
Don?t forget to reward yourself: when you reach a goal, be sure to celebrate. Incentivizing yourself is a great way to stay focused.Check with your physician: if you are at all concerned about the impact of increased physical activity on your personal health, do not hesitate to check with your doctor.
Go shopping: wait, you say, go shopping? Yes! Well, unless you already have comfortable workout shoes and attire. If you don?t already have good workout shoes, be sure to visit your local athletic shop and get some help selecting the right pair.
Balance your diet: food is just as important, if not more important than physical exercise when trying to lose weight. Be sure that you?re taking in enough calories to support your increased activity, but not so much the you eat away all of your hard work
Don?t ignore what your body tells you: your body will tell you whether or not you?re pushing yourself too hard. If you experience any kind of severe pain, dizziness, or other symptoms, stop immediately, and seek medical treatment.

Physical activity can improve your life. Even if you are at a healthy weight, you can experience many great benefits from working out. Decreased depression, better sleep, better cardiovascular health, and reduced risk of type II diabetes are just a few of the many benefits of working out regularly. Give it a try!

Kyle has been using sports like fencing to keep fit, lose weight, and meet new people. Among the favorite sites for getting more fencing information and news is Fencing.Net which includes current news as well as training guides for the sport.
