I can?t imagine a life without animals. We?ve had our corgi, Henry, for 6 years now, and though he?s not the most affectionate creature I love him anyway (his role is more of an administrator in my home than pet, like maybe a supervisor of grounds or one of those cranky old security guards in tired building where nothing ever happens).
Two years ago I was going through one of my biannual should-we-have-another-baby crises when we settled on a labradoodle instead, and Coco joined our family. We brought her home and I immediately went into the full throes of attachment parenting: I made her food, put bows in her hair and we co-slept. This explains why I love her even though she?s been known to eat poopy diapers.
Today we took Coco and Henry to our church for the annual Blessing of the Animals, to celebrate the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi.
There were mostly dogs but we also had a cat, a frog and a turtle.

It was chilly and my kids were wild but it was so very touching to have the animals that are so much more than pets recognized as members of the family.

It was a sweet way to spend a Sunday afternoon.
Now I?m back home, in my sweatpants on my king-sized bed. I hear the boys playing together upstairs, and in the kitchen my husband is putting groceries away. There?s a labradoodle scratching at her ear at my feet, causing my bed to shake like the kind you feed quarters into at a motel that?s rented by the hour.
Just this once I won?t nudge her to stop.
