Cheerleading is certainly a sport these days, combining athletics, dance, gymnastics, tumbling and cheers.
Cheerleading began to gain a new level pf prominence as a sport with the 2000 movie "Bring it On". Since that time EPSN has regularly broadcast the National cheerleading Championships, and the viewership ratings for these events are climbing each and every year since then.

Cheerleading began in the late 1800's thru the turn of the century.
Cheerleading began to be associated with professional sports in the 1960's when the Dallas Cwoboys became noted for their beautiful cheerleaders and wonderful dance routines. The Dallas Cowboy cheerleaders are still considered the elite cheerleading outfit in the country, in a large part due to this history with the sport.
